I teach kindergarten and I purchased this set mid-way through the year and I wish I had it at the beginning of the year. My students are on "building word families" and they loved using the Hot Dots. It is also nice to switch things up a little and throw in an easier level, like using the consonants box because reviewing never hurts. We are working on vowels right now and I think they will enjoy working with a new set, and that is another thing that I really like, is you get all 6 sets to switch things up and have different students work on different sets to build a stronger foundation on that aspect. I have had such luck with these that I also purchased the time, money, adding, and subtracting Hot Dots as well as the Hot Dots Jr. "Ready for School?" so I can use something easier right away at the beginning of the year.

The only disadvantage is I am not always able to see how they are getting their answer, whether they are just pushing answers until they get the right one or not because I use Hot Dots during my small group time and as a "what to do when done". But that is just using classroom management and making sure the students are actually trying to get the right answer and not just guessing.

I was apprehensive when first purchasing this product because of the 1 bad review, but when I received my Hot Dots, I checked all the pens right away and have no problems with them. I highly recommend (and actually have recommended Hot Dots to another school near me) to any teacher. I think it is great that there is such a variety out there for all grade levels!!! WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!!

You really need to watch the 30 day return policy with Amazon. I purchased this product before school started and didn't set it up until after 30 days. NONE of the pens work. Imagine 6 pens and NONE of them work. The skills in the kit look great. The kids will love them when I buy new pens from a different company. I would not recommend buying this item from Amazon.
