Once the screws are in, you cannot close the case.

Great that it puts away together, not very easily but still what an amazing fun toy!!

As others have said, though, the case didn't live up to my expectations.

We bought this toy for my son for his 4th birthday. He plays with it every day, and his 2 year old brother plays with it whenever he can get his hands on it. I would highly recommend this toy, except for the carrying case. For shoppers, I would recommend buying the version of this set without the storage case since you will have to buy a different case anyway. I purchased this set because I thought it would be great to store everything in one case. Here are the problems:

-The case plus the tools is large and quite heavy. I am afraid my 4 y/o will drop it on his foot and break a bone. The latch on the case is not very sturdy and doesn't stay latched very well.

-The tools fit in the case very snugly. I always have to pry them out for my kids, and it is tough even for me. It is nice to have a toy that my child can operate totally independently.

-The storage area on the inside only holds the fancy bolts, and there are about 100 regular bolts hidden beneath the white board that are in a baggie. Once you take those regular bolts out of the baggie, they don't really fit properly and therefore the main cover doesn't ever close properly again. The storage area should hold all of the bolts. So you will still need another container for the regular bolts.

-The cover for the storage area snapped off on the 2nd day without rough play. It is made of only two little tiny pieces of plastic acting as the hinge.

At this point, the storage case is in the garage (heading for the trash) and I have placed the bolts in a locking lid plastic container. I will be shopping for a storage bin to hold this otherwise awesome toy.

Here's the letter I just sent to the manufacturer of this toy:

We received this toy as a gift and have had numerous issues with it. While the basic design of the set is great and has provided many hours of fun, the many design flaws have been a big problem.

-- The electric screwdriver does not work at all. Since I have two kids, they can't both play at the same time without it. Also, the battery compartment screws were very difficult to open to change the batteries. The manual also states that rechargeable batteries cannot be used which is inexcusable for a kids' toy.

--The storage case is a terrible design as can be seen by all the reviews on Amazon.com.

The case issues include:

When I put away the blue wrench for the first time it became stuck in the storage slot. I had to pull on it so hard to remove it I was worried about breaking it. It appears that the wrench has to be facing the right direction so I marked this on the case. A young child should not have to worry about this -- this slot was clearly not kid-tested.

The clasp that closes the case easily pops off and could get lost, then the case would never stay closed again.

The case is not large enough to fit all the piece when putting the set away. It is very difficult for an adult to fit everything it and there is certainly no way a child can be successful at it. Again, this case was clearly not kid-tested enough.

I bought this for my 3 year old son for Christmas. He really enjoys using it but I find it hard to get the tools out and the carrying case is large and does not stay latched. It is impossible for my son to get the tools and screws out by himself. The compartment under the drill mat is the hardest thing to get out and I have to use a real screwdriver and a extra sets off hand to get to the screws stored underneath. The is a great toy but they neat to revamp the carrying case

My 4 year old and 2 year old son got this for Christmas and love it. They've played with it at length. My 4 year old calls it his "work bench". I got this version solely because of the carrying case- wish I had read the reviews first! As mentioned, it is hard to get the tools out of the case for my sons. Packing the case back up to put the toy away is also tedious, as if any of the screws are under the corners of the mat, it doesn't sit flat. And, if there are any screws still screwed into the mat, it won't shut either. I had to take apart my son's "masterpiece" just to put it away. Other than the case, however, we love it!

Great fun, my 3 y.o. and 6 y.o. can't play enough with it. Good for hand-eye coordinationw with the drilling, screwing, plus we use it to count and colors too. Great that it puts away together, not very easily but still what an amazing fun toy!! Came with two drills, and a hand wrench and hand screwdriver. I wish it had replacement drill bits as we are sure to lose them because we will play with this toy SO MUCH!! We are so happy with this purchase, the perfect gift for any toddler.

I BOUGHT THIS A MONTH OR SO AGO FOR MY SON IN THE NAVY TO GIVE TO HIS SON FOR HIS BIRTHDAY, WE JUST OPENED IT THIS MORNING AND THE SCREWDRIVER IS MISSING AND THE DRILL DOES NOT GO FORWARD. IT ONLY GOES IN REVERSE. THIS WAS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.

We received this toy as a gift for our almost 3 year old son. It was fun to play with and has some educational benefits in learning how to use tools. Then we began packing up the toy and all of its parts in it's carrying case, and that is where the problems started. There is one main compartment which holds many of the pieces which is covered by a lid or hatch. The lid on the compartment broke after the first use. It is impossible to get all of the pieces in there to lay flat so the door could close. That is only the beginning in getting this toy to close. Then there is another compartment under the white board which all of the pieces are screwed into. I should start out by saying that the toy will not close while any of the pieces are screwed into the white board, so you have to remove all of the pieces before closing the toy. Then if you have any pieces under the white board, it again is impossible to get them all to lay flat in order for there to be enough room to close the two sides completely. We have resorted in holding all of the pieces in a separate bag, which is annoying. The thought of toy has good intentions, but the execution is horrible. I would not suggest this toy to anyone.
