The idea of this toy is awesome, the finished product is garbage.

When all the bolts are screwed in, you can't stow the screwdriver in the box and close it.

The idea of this toy is awesome, the finished product is garbage.

I have two kids (5 and 8) who were very excited to see this toy on Christmas morning. Like I said, the idea is great: the work-top is the carrying case, they get to use a drill to copy the patterns that came with it, or they can make their own designs, lots of little pieces and three different drill bits (each drill bit works with all the screws).

The toy turns to garbage when you try to copy the patterns they provided with the instruction manual. The very first pattern is designed with more pink bolts than actually provided with the toy so it's impossible to duplicate. Both of the kits had this issue. Then, one of the drills would barely power-up. When my husband opened up the battery compartment, he noticed the soldering was crumbling and it was hot enough to actually burn him.

**Update**

Immediately after I posted this review, I received a message from the Educational Insights Operations Manager. She was very concerned about our experience with the product and genuinely seemed to care, handling my scathing review with grace. She sent us a new (upgraded) drill kit and a gift certificate quicker than I thought possible. The new kit is perfect with a working drill and more than enough screws for the patterns. I am impressed beyond belief.

My child received this as a gift, but like so many others the drill didn't work on ours. I contacted the Educational Insights customer service department via phone, but was told that my only option was to buy a replacement screwdriver for $12. Yes, even though it was their product that was defective to begin with! Otherwise I was told I could return the product to where it was purchased and if I didn't buy it from their website then they didn't seem to care at all. Terrible, terrible customer service! This products MSRP of $30 is ridiculous! Apparently as of 4/28/11 this company doesn't stand behind their products in the least! And after reading these other reviews it seems that even if our screwdriver did work we wouldn't have enough screws to make the designs anyway! So frustrating!

The idea is perfect. An electric drill with three different bits, a whole lot of bolts, and a box with a lot of holes. Perfect for playing with for hours. And that lives up to the promise. Also great is the packaging--very minimal, easy to open.

Here are the problems:
1) Did not ship with batteries, and, as other reviewers noted, it requires a very long, very thin phillips-head screwdriver to open the battery compartment. If you don't have exactly the right screwdriver, expect an unhappy kid.

2) When all the bolts are screwed in, you can't stow the screwdriver in the box and close it. The screws protrude into the space where the electric driver would be stowed. So before you pack it up you have to remove a dozen bolts. Make the case bigger so this isn't a problem.

3) The screwdriver sometimes doesn't work. Banging it brings it back to life. Other reviewers mentioned this as well, so it's clearly an design or manufacturing problem, and not just a lemon.

3) It's a few bolts short of filling up all the holes in the board. 60 bolts < 8x8=64 grid. Not a big problem, but just a feeling of incompleteness that had the kids looking around for more bolts. (If I had OCD, this would be an instant zero stars review).

In summary, a good toy with a few annoying problems.

We have this same toy in the regular (older), non-travel version. My son LOVES it. When his teacher asked for Christmas donations to the class so the kids had some new toys, I thought this one would be perfect. Gave it to her, she was thrilled, neat toy! Got it back from her 2 days later saying that she could not open the battery compartment on the drill, no matter how tiny a screwdriver she used. No problem, I thought, I have TONS of teeny screwdrivers of all sizes at home - I'll do it for her. Took it home and found that you don't just need a tiny screwdriver - no, you need a tiny LONG screwdriver because of the truly idiotic placement of the screws. They are recessed way down in the thing and if your screwdriver isn't long enough - as the teacher's and mine weren't - you either strip the screws or can't reach them at all. I haven't a clue who designed this thing this way or why, but it's really moronic. Why make a toy that you cannot *easily* get to the screws to change the batteries or even open the compartment to INSERT them the first time?! Went out and had to BUY a longer tiny screwdriver just for this thing (never needed one before or since), only to find that in the teacher's attempts, she'd stripped one of the screws and now I can't open it regardless. Can get 2 of 3 open no problem now, but one can no longer be gripped and so, won't open. So now it's garbage. Great. Really ridiculous and they need to change those screw placements as it seems from reading the reviews, I'm not the only one with trouble. Wonder how many people who don't write reviews got fed up with this thing and either threw it out or returned it, too.

So... my reviews on durability and play fun and all that are based on the old normal version that we have. My overall review (1 star - would give it 0 if I could since no one can play with it!) is based on THIS totally unusable one.
