Our son received this gift on Christmas Eve. Its built well, and has a good voice, but nothing about this item is 'microscope'. The lens system offers minimal magnification of pre-PRINTED slides. That's right, these are not much more than bugs printed on plastic that are SLIGHTLY enlarged through an eye piece - and its not intended to have you create new slides. We are MUCH MUCH better off buying a book about insects, seeing the bug larger than life in photos, and reading about it together.

Save your money. This product was returned.

Great science item for my home child care. It gets a lot of usage! They love looking,exploring, learning and sharing what they see. Worth the buy!

I bought for my granddaughter who is six and attends a school that focuses on the environment and the eco-system. I was pleased, and so was she, with the recorded narrative of each slide that is sounded when the slide code is punched in by the child. Being the quick study she is, she learned the info after only one run-thru. The next option on the toy, is to press buttons to challenge the viewer [the child looking thru the microscope]to remember what facts were given on each slide. She remembered all of them. Hence the attraction to the microscope ended after twenty minutes.

Although there is nothing in the ad copy that describes the toy [and it IS a toy], I was hoping we could make slides from our own garden, etc., but if using this toy, one has to buy additional slides that fit the toy. Unmet expectations on my part. For me, $40 was a lot to spend for a less than half hour experience.

I will say that one reason I ordered it was that it claims to be hardy. I had read reviews of other children's microscopes, and decided against them, given that most reviews described the other microscopes as poorly made and not really good quality in terms of focus. This one IS hardy and has a little heft to it, I am guessing, because of the three C batteries in its housing.

Either my granddaughter is just too smart, or the age bracket stated for the microscope is a little off.

When we WERE enjoying it, it WAS good, but I had hoped it would be a more enduring experience.

My son loved the microscope. He really enjoyed viewing the slides and listening to the fun facts.

I bought this talking microscope for Christmas to give to an 8 year old boy that I tutor. We put it together and it did not take long to set it up. I was quite surprised that it does give a lot of information about the slides of bugs that come with it. And it also has a quiz for each slide. The quality and loudness of the sound is good also. It was a unique gift at a very reasonable price, and the little boy really liked it. He can do it alone and it's a change from all the video games, etc. that he does. The only down side to it is that the "field" items for finding your own specimens are made of cheap plastic. But I guess they are not the focus of the toy really- the microscope is. Also keep in mind that this is still a toy, even though the microscope's magnification is pretty good for a toy.

My son loves all the things he can do with this microscope. It has so many features, and with the slides that come with it, he is entertained for hours while learning! I highly recommend this item.

My four year old grad daughter really loves this microscope. She likes like listening to the preformed slides information and she likes finding new things to put under the scope. The portable scope that can go outside is a really good item for kids. This has a really good magnifying range and my grand daughter can get a really close look at the things she finds outside.

I turned on my computer for the sole reason of rating the product. It is AWESOME!!!!! It is far better than the description states. All of the parts are made with quality, durable materials. The toy is rated 5 years and older, so I didn't expect that our 5-year-old would be able to use all of the functions. However, this is the PERFECT educational toy for a 5-year-old. I thought he would only be able to use the "facts" function; however, he enjoys the "quiz" function as well. We are all learning a lot with this toy and it is helping to keep our son excited about science. The slides are very durable as well and they add to the fun of the microscope. Rather than circular blobs on each slide, there are "real" insects. My son LOVES it! The bug catcher is really nice as well and it has a slidable magnifying glass so you can magnify the insect nor matter where it crawls in the catcher. The "multi-purpose" tool is neat as well. I should also mention that the "talking" part is neat as well. The audio is very clear (not like a lot of toys that are nearly inaudible) and the voice is very easy to understand. This is a perfect "first microscope."

GAVE TO MY 4 YEAR OLD GRANDSON. HE FINDS IT VERY FACINATING AND ENJOYS USING IT WITHOUT ADULT HELP.
VERY EDUCATIONAL AND STIMULATING

She played with it for about 3 days and it was over.. One listen to it a couple of times its not that much fun anymore. You have to look at there animation bugs and not something you can bring outside like I thought. Cute for someone young like 5 to my opinion. My daughter wanted more but she is 7.
