My kids LOVE this microscope - they are 6 & 4 yrs old respectively. They have spent a lot of time peering through the microscopes viewfinder to look at the included creepy crawlies. Unfortunately - because the storage for the slides isn't intrinsic to the microscope - they've gotten lost. I was also disappointed that there wasn't an expansion pack of slides for the kids to learn more. Great toy - but limited.

My son adored this toy and showed it off to everyone. Then the buttons stopped working after a week. He is so sad that it lasted such a short amount of time.

This really IS a very cool toy. But today is the first time we used it and already the buttons don't work properly. I am going to write the company. In theory if this toy worked as it should I would give it kudos all around. The slides are durable and seem safe enough. The pictures are good and you can, like with any microscope adjust the clarity. There is a volume control on ours so that is also adjustable. It is just getting the buttons to work that is frustrating. From the get go they had my son frustrated and he gave up after a few minutes and walked away. While it was working however, he was facinated with the facts about the bugs. He still has a little trouble keeping one eye closed while looking into the view finder though. (He's 5) I will update this if the company helps us out by replacing the item with one where the buttons work better.

The slides are photos.
The slides are limited in number to what you get with the microscope, so once you've memorized them, the "educational value" becomes limited.
The stage of the microscope is on such an angle as to make it difficult to place "found objects" on it to view under magnification.
Really, is this the best we can come up with for the 5 to 7-year-old crowd interested in science?

I bought this for my 5 year old nephew for Christmas. He loved it, his parents loved it, my parents loved it, my husband and I loved it. In fact, the adults were so impressed by this fun educational toy that poor Dev didn't get to see it that much Christmas day! But even in the short time he spent with it, he was already spouting off facts about bugs like a tiny little Mr. Wizard.

We bought this for a 5 year old and she enjoys it. Very durable. I was disappointed that the "prepared slides" are not of actual bugs - they're pictures of bugs - some of them very, very tiny pictures. For example, the bee picture is microscopic, so when the slide is put in the microscope, it's still smaller than a real bee.

I agree with other reviewers that additional slide sets would be nice - even if they don't have a "talk" code to go with them.

This is a great idea and my 3-yr-old was really excited to work with it, but the buttons didn't work and wouldn't let me enter the code for the slides. The slides are pictures of bugs and aren't really magnified. I'm waiting to hear back from the manufacturer about the faulty buttons. I'm probably just going to return it. Wish it could have worked!

I got this microscope for my children (ages 6, 4 and 2) for Christmas, and they fought over using it. Once I emphasized the importance of caring for the slides, the 6 year old took over that duty. I'm delighted by their interest, and hope it sparks desire to learn more science. I plan to get them a more sophisticated microscope in a few years. My big girl has already looked at her own hair and a few other tiny things that are not on slides. My only quibble is that the talking voice is VERY LOUD with no volume control, and I wouldn't want them hanging over it for too long at a time.
