Book Description

0321011848 978-0321011848 January 11, 2002 1
Written with an emphasis on helping readers understand and develop expertise in both teaching and learning, this book focuses on the science of educational psychology and the art of what it takes to become an expert teacher. Rather than glossing over theory and focusing primarily on skills, Sternberg and Williams offer a crystal-clear, in-depth presentation of both the science (principles and research) and art (practice and applications) of teaching. Principles are illustrated through the practice of expert teachers to encourage personal reflection by the reader. By helping readers discover what it takes to become expert students, as well as expert teachers, the book gives unique insight into the teaching-and-learning process. Emphasis throughout the book on creative, analytical, and practical thinking skills encourages deeper understanding of concepts, stretches the thinking process, and applies learning to everyday events. This Triarchic Theory of Human Intelligence, developed by Robert Sternberg, specifically addresses important issues such as critical thinking, diversity, and student achievement.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Written to help readers understand and develop expertise in both teaching and learning, Educational Psychology focuses on the art and science necessary to become an expert teacher.

Renowned scholars, Sternberg and Williams help readers capitalize on their strengths by integrating questions into the text that encourage analytical, creative, and practical thinking. This framework, based on Sternberg’s triarchic theory of human intelligence, helps ensure that readers think deeply about what they are learning, rather than merely processing information at a superficial level.

In addition, Educational Psychology also:

Shows Readers How to Use Text Principles in the Classroom

  • Expert Teacher Interviews illustrate the classroom application of chapter material.
  • The Flexible Expert feature provides examples of solutions–analytical, creative, and practical–for daily challenges both students and teachers face in the classroom.
  • Implications for Teaching illustrate the strategies expert teachers use in the classroom, using specific concepts of educational psychology.

Encourages Reflective Thinking

  • Thinking Questions–Thinking Analytically, Thinking Creatively, and Thinking Practically–appear throughout each chapter to encourage readers to think deeply about chapter concepts.
  • Constructing Your Own Learning activities help readers understand constructivism by using the theory themselves to build upon what they have read in the text.
  • Forum debates illustrate contested educational issues –such as homogenous versus heterogeneous grouping–and show that there are middle-ground positions between extreme views of the issues.
  • Becoming an Expert: Questions and Problems, grouped by elementary, middle, and high school settings, invite readers to apply chapter concepts to the problems of classroom practice.

Emphasizes Diversity, Helping Prepare Teachers for the Classrooms of Today and Tomorrow

  • Guidelines for providing support for gifted students and students with disabilities are presented in Chapter 5: Individual Differences.
  • The educational implications of socioeconomic, cultural, gender and linguistic diversity are discussed in detail in Chapter 6: Group Differences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb for basics in education, December 20, 2005

This review is from: Educational Psychology (Paperback)
I used this text this past semester for a psychology class entitled "Psychological Development and Classroom Processes," and I must say that I can already tell that this book will be an invaluble tool for my future as an educator! It goes over so many basic principles, encourages interaction with the topics covered, and is set up in a way that early parts lead nicely into the later chapters, unlike in some other educational psychology books I've looked at. Covering everything from behavioral learning, to classroom management and beyond, this is a book that every educator should own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Perspective, November 2, 2004
This review is from: Educational Psychology (Paperback)
This book gives a very good idea of the value of educational psychology. Sternberg shows an excellent ability to teach through this book, and the way it is organized is superb. The research is up to date, and relevant.

I believe it is a great buy for both introduction and deeper reflection into how the mind learns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational Psych, January 23, 2012

Paid a lot less than bookstore. The book had some visible wear from regular use and there was writing and highlighting inside. It's a textbook though and I expected that. This was a great transaction!
