"The text is very easy to read and provides a good overview of the topics." - Linda Shepherd, Indiana University - Bloomington

"When it comes to balancing qualitative and quantitative approaches in a single text, this is the best book currently available in the market." - Hari Koirala, Eastern Connecticut State University

From the Back Cover

This book is the only introductory educational research text to offer a truly balanced and integrated treatment of both quantitative and qualitative methods.  Written in clear and practical language, Educational Research will help its readers get started doing their own research and will also help them become better readers of research.

Updates for this edition include:

  • Increased coverage of ethics in Chapter 10: Reporting and Evaluating Research
  • A new boxed feature called “Ethical Dilemma” has been added to every chapter in part three. The feature summarizes an ethical issue related to the chapter content that comes up in the research of professionals. Each Ethical Dilemma ends by posing a discussion question to the reader.
  • The majority of the sample articles have been replaced with more recent articles. All of the annotations and other associated text has been rewritten accordingly.
  • New Chapter 1 The Process and Approaches of Research further integrates the treatment of quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Additional coverage of how to find a research problem (Chapter 2)
  • Additional information on the difference between dissertation, thesis, and journal article writing strategies (Chapter 3)
  • Updated information on statistical programs and simulation programs for learning statistics (Chapter 8)
  • information on the relationship between response rate and response bias (Chapter 12)

Creswell is pretty much the research authority in higher education. A must read for doctoral students everywhere. Great investment. Glad I bought it for class.

Textbook companies have long be criticized for exploiting the education market. Paying over a $100 for a Kindle version of this text is simply reprehensible. The international student edition is available, new, in print, for less than 1/5 of this price.

PHU, the publisher, exists to maximize profits. Creswell, once an academic of strong standing appears to also have taken to this notion as well. Creswell, who has now chosen to continue to prostitute his work (now in the fourth edition) should be ashamed. What constitutes work worthy of a new edition? Merging chapters 1 and 2 and adding one ancillary antidote. That's it. Call it a new edition so the used editions no longer have any value on the market and wait for the pay checks to roll in. The Ethical Dilemma that was added was not in chapter three, but is Creswell's exploitation of the textbook market.

Creswell's continuance to exploit the market should remove him from any future consideration by instructors seeking a text on research methods. The purpose of scholarly work is not to make unjust profits on the backs of students, but to serve the advancement of the academy. In my opinion, Creswell no longer has the ethical standing to write on this subject and readers and instructors should look elsewhere. There are a number of open access and reasonably priced works that are as good (or better) than this title and who's authors have chosen to not maximize profits on the backs of students, but to serve the greater good over their own.

This book was used as a textbook for a graduate level research class. It was a great introduction. I still reference it to help guide me or to look for further references. It may be too elementary if you're a pro. However, it's very helpful and easy to use if you are new to researching.

This is the best research text I've had at graduate school level. It's easy to understand and is quite an interesting read. Creswell captures everything one needs to know about QT and QL research designs. I'm definitely keeping this book around.
