This four-CD set is a useful compilation of good quality, previously released titles. Trigonometry Explorer is a comprehensive introduction and overview of trigonometry that allows students to manipulate angles and objects, view graphically illustrated real world applications of concepts, hear explanations, and receive feedback. It's very straightforward, which is essential, given the complex subject matter. For students preparing to take a trig course, this makes an ideal introduction. As a study aid, however, the program falls short. There is no search function and no records are kept. Geometry World's design isn't flashy but its content is plentiful and the lessons are excellent. After signing in, a student can either work through one of the many well-designed tutorials (we counted 24) on subjects like area, triangles or volume, or play an adventure game where exercises are contained in a maze. Especially nice are the simulations of traditional materials, such as the Venn diagram simulator, the tangram blocks, or the geoboard. These would be especially useful for a teacher who wants to demonstrate a particular concept to the entire class with a computer projector. The tutorials are not playful, like the kind you'd find in Geometry Blaster, but they are to the point and often interactive, asking a student to apply the knowledge. DK's Encyclopedia of History is a general reference with an excellent time-line approach to events. It chronicles history from 4000 BC to the present through 100 biographies and 4000 news articles, with 12,000 "news in brief" paragraphs that tell you what else was happening during that time. Features include powerful search capabilities, plus hours of multimedia including music, quotes, films, animations and artwork. The breadth of content is extensive, with its 3,000 screens, 800,000 words, 3,000 pictures and 1,000 sound files. Finally, important subjects like chemistry, math, physics and life sciences are presented in DK's Encyclopedia of Science. Eighty animations, 40 video sequences, 800 photos and illustrations and 3 1/2 hours of audio bring the subject matter to life. Over 900,000 words of text including a Who's Who of Science make this an exceptionally comprehensive resource. New features to this version include a searchable glossary and deeper content. This program was awarded the 1997 Bologna New Media Prize.
