Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

From the publisher of Classroom Connect, a newsletter chock-full of Internet tips for K^-12 classrooms, and Educator's Internet Companion [RBB O 1 95], another great source for integrating the Net into everyday school lesson plans, comes this Web directory. The sites listed here overlap very little with those in the Companion. More than 200 Web sites are highlighted with 500 related sites mentioned. Each of the 11 chapters covers a curriculum area, such as art, foreign language, health and/or physical education, and vocational education. The main sites are listed at the start of each chapter and include at least one general site that serves as an index to other sites on that subject, noted by a special icon. Each Web site merits a one-page entry. Provided in addition to a screen capture are the URL address, ideas for classroom applications, and three to four related sites. The classroom-integration ideas range from easy to advanced, but no grade levels are recommended. An appendix offers questions and answers about the Web. A glossary, site list, and index complete the book. A 16-page section of color screen captures is found in the middle of the book with curriculum area, title, and URL noted.

The book includes a CD-ROM that can run on either a PC or a Mac. The "Read Me" file definitely should be read first. Even following the directions, we had trouble getting the PC version to work. The Mac version worked like a charm. The CD, called TourGuide, allows for live or local tours of the main Web sites discussed in the book. Libraries with a modem and SLIP/PPP connection can browse the Web sites online. No modem? No problem! The local tour allows a "visit" to each site--in color--and a chance to explore several links. On a "local" tour of the Global Currency Converter, clicking on Ireland provided world equivalents for the Israeli shekel. Aside from such minor errors, the local tour proved a great introduction to new Web sites. Given the difficulties often associated with live Internet presentations at meetings, the local tour provides a unique solution for exploring Web sites.

While we argue with the editors' Web-site-as-the-ultimate-reference-source approach, this package of book and CD-ROM definitely belongs next to the Internet computer in school and public libraries. Circulating copies would also be appreciated by educators, parents, and students.
