This is a nice abacus, except some of the wooden bars are crooked. This is not very obvious when they are covered with the wooden beads though. The paint is chipping off a bit too and I think the paint is starting to discolour the wood bars. Both my 3 year old and my 8 month old play with it a lot and they are quite rough with it at times. For the price, it is still pretty good. Not great though.

The product feels good, stron and solid, stands well with a good fundation. It is a good toy for kids to learn math, I am trying to teach the mutiplication concepts for my 5 1/2 yrs old, he is able to make use of it. Once the kids gets familiar to use it, you can just hand over this with a peice of paper and he/she should be able to write the mutiplication tables below 10, once they keep practicing or playing with it for math purpose they surely will be able to memorize the mutiplication tables. This can be used for additions too. I also have a 3-yr old trying to play with it some times to count and identify colors. Using such toy for a kid for math purpose will pay for it, just go for it, they can learn from it. I am giving it a 4-star feels like the paint may ware on the beads, who knows it may stay fine too.

This is a very well-made, substantial toy. I don't know how educational it will be for my niece, but at least she gets to play with the pretty colors and move the beads around. (After all, who really knows how to use an abacus besides the Chinese?) If this were to be an educational toy, someone would have to sit with the child and actively instruct, I think. At any rate, it's a very nice toy and I don't begrudge the money I spent on it.

I purchased this toy as a fun and educational tool to help my eldest learn the basics of math. I was surprised how quickly he picked up the basic concepts and began to count, add, and subtract. This works better than counting fingers because you run out of fingers before you run out of beads on the abacus. I have also been surprise by how often my kids go back to use this toy. Now my youngest (toddler) also has taken to the abacus - more as a colorful object that he can manipulate.

The abacus is fine - reasonably well made. I'd like a tiny bit more horizontal space. My son likes it - we play counting games or store (it's the cash register and I order up different colors), etc. But so far we've returned 2 because they have been damaged either in shipping or before. As usual, Amazon shipping is a bit short on padding. Hopefully the next one won't be broken or have gashes in the wood.

I choose this over the Mellisa and Dough Abacus (though the other was few dollars cheaper) is because in photos it appeared that the M&D one had metal bars, vs this one has wood bars. Also after reading few negative reviews about M&D I made this choice.
I am glad we chose this. It is very durable and our 18pound baby sits on it and pushes it around (he doesnt realize yet it is an abacus :) ). I like the smooth curved shape and ergonomics. |
