kris' most under appreciated record...,
By
This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
...well, i believe all'a his cds are under appreciated, but thats jus me.
i thought this was pure genius when it first dropped and time has done nothing to change that opinion. i found a crate of my ol' school cassette tapes yesterday and i been playin ER'THANG... all'a yo yo's tapes, salt n pepa's stuff... wc and the maad circle, audio two's first two tapes... schooly d, 3 times dope, del... ER'BODY! ...even isis (of xclan) and harmony (from the bdp camp)... ya know, most ol school hip hop is only good for reminiscing nowadays... the lyrics and production were good for the day, but dont always hold up under the 'modern standards'... but edutainment's different. this remains nearly as fresh today as it first did when i got it. might be brotha parkers 3rd or 4th best album of all'a em: criminal minded, ghetto music, edutainment, then live/hardcore/worldwide... i could put this on around family gatherings, just to educate the young'uns on what 'real' hip hop is about. im'a have this on cd before the weekend's out...

The finest album of BDP,
By A Customer
This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
In many ways, KRS-One is more intelligent than Public Enemy. This album is well organized and the breakbeats kick total butt I believe. KRS-One understands the true nature of America and the differences between races. However, he loves all except the wack and believes that humanity is the key to the future.

Classic,
By D Bourgie "dbourgie@comcast.com" (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews

This is a very insightful rap album. BDP's longest album is also their most expermental. KRS-One takes on such topics such as racism, the homeless, gun violence, and even the meat industry. Favorites include Beef, Ya Know the Rules, Love's Gonna Get'cha, Ya Strugglin', and The Kenny Parker Show. This is a true hip hop classic which I could say about all BDP's albums.

Every human being should listen, study, and practice all that kris is speaking about on this disc. It taught me alot about alot. More positive music needs to surface in this world and krs is the best example there is. Check out bradley nowell's song "krs one" to get a feel for how many lives kris has changed for the better.(sublime--40 oz to freedom) get this disc!!

A Classroom Course Has Never Been So Cheap,
By Bobby Michaels (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
How much is this CD? $15.00? How many college courses can you take for that? None. Edutainment, (Education Through Entertainment) is not only dope hip hop, but is educational. Breaking down the walls of ignorance that the goverment wants us to stay behind, KRS-1 comes with some truly mentally uplifting material on this one. His strong beats and fluidic firey lyrics, make this a true hip hop classic. From the Ruff and hard hitting Hous Ni**a's and You Know The Rules to the smoothness of Love's Gonna Getcha. Edutaiment is 90 minutes of beats, rhymes, and street education. When I say street, I am not referring to gangstr BS, im talking about the street being the one place where what you here is real, and its where to get the real story. Edutainment is a true hip hop classic, great reference material for the newby's who want to be "down". This will test you. HAA! Mark D gives this CD a 5 on the hype scale. (Check the "More About Me" section for details.

One of the best rap albums of all time.,

This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
This album really stretch the limits of hip-hop. It tread ground that few hip-hop artists would dare go and where few (if any) have gone since. I think that most rappers need to listen to this album before going into the studio to REMIND them what rap is about. PURE POETRY!

"It's not a perm, it's a temporary",
This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
Straightened hair may be temporary, but KRS-One's influence on Hiphop is permanent. And this CD is just one of the reasons why. The beats and music are slammin' and the lyrics are boombastic-fantastic. It gets better and better everytime I spin it. I've heard it said that KRS is too political, or too "conscious", or all about his philosophy, but how is that even a complaint? I like music that rocks me, or makes me want to dance, or drops the funky beatdown like James Brown with a badge, but that is merely the minimum requirement. It has to do all that AND make me think, otherwise, why bother? If I wanted music to go braindead to, I'd just tune into top 40 radio and put my head under a truck tire. If you want more from your music than something to eat up your time while the world floats past you, BUY THIS ALBUM, then check out the rest of KRS's incredible catalog. Peace.

Class Is Now In Session {5 Stars},
By
This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
With this 1990 release, Boogie Down Productions was steamrolling their way to legendary status. This was back when BDP dropped fresh material every year from '87 (Criminal Minded) until '92 (Sex & Violence), so that's not necessarily as easy as it may sound. With classic tracks like "Love's Gonna Get 'Cha", "Ya Strugglin' ", "House Ni***s", "100 Guns" (Ja Rule bit this joint), "Beef", and "Blackman In Effect", you know that the album is, at the very least, doper than most other 1990 hip hop releases. But there are solid tracks laced throughout the album and there are no fillers. Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would give this album less than 5 stars, but that's just me. This album is just as fresh now as it was 17 (oh my god, 17 years?!!!) years ago.
As far as flaws, I can't think of any. Sure, KRS gets political, so obviously it's going to rub some people the wrong way (like most political stances do), but I loved it and saw nothing wrong with it. The beats are strictly b-boy styled boom bap vibes and nothing less. If you ain't feelin' that, then you may be browsing the wrong genre for your music. Edutainment is just that -- educational entertainment. There isn't a beat that KRS One can't get busy on and he entertains the masses with knowledge instead of dreams of material prosperity. Hip hop heads all around the world (myself included) recognize him as one of the illest to ever stand in front of a microphone. The production is on point, so what more could you ask for? I recommend grabbing this album if you cross paths with it. Standout Tracks: The Homeless, Ya Strugglin' feat. Kwame Toure, Beef (My Favorite), Ya Know The Rules, Love's Gonna Get 'Cha (Material Love), House Ni***s, Blackman In Effect, Original Lyrics feat. Special K, and 100 Guns

One of the greatest album of any genres,

I've been a BDP&(KRS)since the beginning I was in middle school when CRIMINAL MINDED dropped.Personally "By all means necessary" was my favorite for long time. I remember when I got EDUTAINMENT christmas 1990...I thought it was true brilliance with songs like "BEEF" and "BREATH CONTROL 2". But it hasn't been 'til recently that i've changed my opinion...THIS IS THE BEST BDP ALBUM everything just came together on this one ..not to say By all means...or criminal isn't just as good, but EDUTAINMENT is like the title claims EDUCATION & ENTERTAINMENT...you couldn't ask for anything more...its also the most clever name for an album that i've ever heard..I think it took for me to get older to really realize how Near Perfect this album is...and probably is the first "CONCEPT ALBUM" in hip hop. THIS ALBUM IS A MUST FOR ANY KID WHO WANTS TO CHECK OUT SOME "OLD SCHOOL" HIP HOP WITH SOME SUBSTANCE IN IT..THAT'S ENTERTAINING ALSO...EASILY A TOP 5 HIP HOP ALBUM OF ALL TIMES..NO EXAGGERATION!!!
