Book Description

4 and upP and up
Edward wishes he could fly. But no matter how much he adjusts and re-adjusts the splurchler and turbo-twirler on his Skyhopper 2000, he can't get off the ground. Imagine Edward's thrill when he gets a coupon for not just one, but three wishes. Edward makes a wish that his Skyhopper could fly. And there it goes - Boing! Sproing! Z-z-ooom! - without him. Things really start to lurch out of control when his mother tells him to clean his room. Edward wishes that he didn't have to! After a monster gobbles up the contents of his room until there's nothing left to clean, Edward is determined to be more careful with his last wish. Wishes, like flying, should not be taken lightly. Will Edward ever figure out what he really wants to wish for?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—Edward wants his bicycle, which he has named the Sky-Hopper 2000, to fly, so he purchases a ticket at the park that is good for three wishes from the Eureka Lucky Wish Company. As in other stories of this ilk, his wishes go awry. The first is wasted when his bike takes off without him. The second results in a slurping, burping Bog Bubbler that eats all his possessions. When he doesn't want to take a bath, the tub relocates outside to join in a bathtub race on the lawn with polar bears, penguins, and assorted tub toys. Things return to normal at 8:00 p.m., when the wishes expire, but the boy is not satisfied. He calls Eureka to ask for one more wish, which is granted, at least in his imagination, as he and the Sky-Hopper soar through the sky. Todd makes liberal use of exclamation points, italics, and made-up words to increase the story's zaniness. The pencil, ink, and computer-generated illustrations attempt to keep up with the frenzied pace of the text. There's some nonsensical fun here, but it feels as though the author is trying too hard to be funny and the result is a hodgepodge. Overall, the book just doesn't fly.—Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT

Review

The pictures are colourful and quirky, and Edward’s mad-cap adventures will make young readers smile.

Edward’s adventures are action-packed with just a touch of silliness.

More About the Author

Words and pictures have always been a big part of Patricia Storms' life, ever since she was a little kid. Patricia has always loved to write and draw, especially cartoons and humorous illustrations. Her teachers in school enjoyed her cartoon work, but often encouraged her to move beyond cartoons into more respected forms of art. As soon as she finds a more respected form of art, she promises to drop the cartooning.

Patricia is an award-winning cartoonist, as well as a children's book illustrator and author. Her picture book The Pirate and the Penguin was named one of the top 10 Great Books for Children for 2011, by the Canadian Toy Testing Council. She is also the new cartoonist who draws Chirp, the much-loved yellow bird from Owlkids. Patricia lives and creates in Toronto, Canada, with her husband and two fat cats in a cosy old house full to the brim with books.

Fun! Imaginative and filled with great words that tickle the tongue like boing, sproing, splurchler and figgler. Takling wild turns of the imagination, Todd hooks readers in with fun words and the opportunmity to make three wishes - a favorite children's fantasy.
