Book Description

Second edition of The Pocket Guide to Edwardian England, newly revised and expanded.

The Edwardian Era simplified, organized, and easy to reference.

Aimed towards writers of historical fiction, though genealogists, Downton Abbey fans, and the curious alike will find this an excellent starting point for their own research.

Compiled from lectures and blog posts on Edwardian Promenade, as well as 70% more original content, Edwardian England: A Guide to Everyday Life, 1900-1914 poses to give a entry level, but thorough look at the time period made popular by Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge.

About the Author

Evangeline Holland was raised on both coasts and straight down the middle of America, where the cobblestone streets of Old Town Alexandria, the wild prairies and outlaws of Kansas, and the rolling hills of San Francisco inspired her love of history. Luckily, Evangeline was able to grow up and indulge in this passion with the best job in the world: writing historical fiction. She lives in Northern California with incredibly possessive and territorial cat, a perpetually disastrous kitchen, and a house full of books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for writers and researchers April 18, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has lots of great details which I never would have had the time or knowledge to compile. As an author, I needed specific information about London, society, names of stores and goods, manners, fashion etc. and this book delivers that information quite well. I only wish it was more detailed about the London neighborhoods and shopkeepers, but overall it is a valuable resource for anyone who seeks accuracy in their Edwardian, England world building.

One word of caution - this book reads more like a long essay than a chapter book. The font is odd, and the chapters have abrupt, to-the-point sentences. There are no flowery opening sentences, and both headings and sub-headings are buried in with the rest of the text. This edition would benefit from some cleaning up to make it more user-friendly. The information is there, it just takes more effort than it should to locate and ingest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like the Book but Maybe not on Kindle January 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've enjoyed Evangeline Holland's Edwardian Promenade since I learned about it on Up Yours podcast. Haven't finished the book yet but so far so good. The only thing I don't like is the formatting of some of the tables & illustrations doesn't work well with the Kindle. Consider the hardcopy vs Kindle.
