The handle is ergonomic and fit well in large hand.

I now have seven or eight razors, including Merkurs, vintage-Gillettes, and some vintage single-edge Gems - and the Edwin Jagger is STILL my favorite razor.

UPDATE: 1/7/2014 - Now that I've had this for a couple years I thought I'd update my review. Not much to say... I still love the razor. The chrome is still flawless an rust free. One item worth mentioning though is that I recently started shaving with a shaving oil SHAVE SECRET SHAVING OIL- THE BEST SHAVE EVER! 18.75ML and it's amazing how close I can shave using the oil. But the oil on my hands is making it a little more difficult to grip the razor since the handle is smooth. Just thought you might like to know that.

I own several double-edge razors. The Edwin Jagger DE89BL is the most recent addition to my shaving arsenal. I'd honestly have to say it is my favorite razor.

First of all, as others have mentioned, it has the most beautiful chrome finish I've ever seen on a razor. It just exudes quality. Even the underside of the head has the same, flawlessly chromed surface as the rest of the razor. Although the handle is also chromed and smooth, it does not really slip in the hand as you might expect. That is so because of a nice little double-lip near the top of the handle that let your fingers just naturally fall into as you hold the razor.

There is a "just-right" heft and balance to the razor as well. It's just a tad lighter than the Parker 91R Parker 91R Super Heavyweight Double Edge Safety Razor and 10 Shark Chrome Blades, another razor that I own but significantly heavier than the Merkur model 180

I've spent the last six months learning how to make shaving less of a chore. My first step was using a high quality shaving cream, a shaving brush, and a good moisturizer. While researching these items, I read more and more about the advantages of DE (Double Edge) safety razors.

I decided to buy one and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I almost went with the German made Merkur Heavy Duty (34c) razor, which seems to be the most commonly recommended DE for a new safety-razor-shaver. I'm glad I continued to investigate razors (the Badger and Blade internet forum is a fantastic resource) because the English made Edwin Jagger De89 is considered, by many, to be superior to the Merkur.

First of all, its appearance; it may be the brightest, shiniest thing I own. It's chroming is deep, flawless, and bright. The chroming method used is the same used by Rolls Royce for its chrome accents. The Edwin Jagger De89 comes with either a vertically lined handle, or a smooth handle. I went with the lined as I thought it might provide a little extra traction with wet hands. The razor arrived in a nice, blue, textured presentation box (however, the box did get a little crushed during shipping.)

The razor itself is an absolute joy to use. As stated in many reviews, the balance and weight is absolutely perfect. The handle is a little longer than the Merkur HD, which is good for me (I have large hands). After watching a few instructional youtube videos regarding proper angle and razor use, I gave it a try. It was unlike any shave I've ever had before (it's been all cartridge or disposable razors in my past). The solid weight of the razor against my face just felt... better. It also heats up as you rinse it and retains that heat, which felt great against my skin.

This is my first D/E safety razor. I've been using it for about 2 months now and really like it. At first I was concerned that the handle was to short (measure 3 3/8" from under the head) but I've gotten used to it. There are also no engraved or raised lines on the handle for grip but it holds firm unless you're covered in soap. I've read that it was designed after the Merkur HD and the head is made by Muhle. This feels balanced and comfortable in the hand and paired with the Derby blades gives a nice shave. I've since switched to AStra Superior platinum blades and find them to be similar in comfort but then again my technique improves with every shave. I noted from a Parker butterfly type safety razor review, that there was a concern with the blade not sitting even in the head, thereby allowing one side to have more blade showing than the other. That s not the case with this head. The blade and bar are even and dead nuts parallel on both sides. I'm fully satisfied with this razor and have no need to try others.

I will say that if your just considering the switch to wet shaving with a D/E razor, it will take more time than a cartridge as 2 to 3 passes are necessary. My first shave was almost 20 minutes on a Saturday morning with a few nicks on the neck. I'm down to about 10mins now. If I'm in a rush I still have my Gillette custom 3 disposable at the ready and can get out in less than 5mins. Dont let the time deter you. Unless you try it you wont understand but shaving with a D/E razor is a luxurious experience, make time and enjoy it. I use Proraso creme and an Omega Stripey badger brush, and finish off with C.o. Bigelow Bay Rum after shave balm.

Ps. Expect spectators, there's something that turns a girl on about watching you glide a d/e blade around your face and neck with precision.
