5.0 out of 5 stars Nice shave bowl
I use this with the Jagger Best Badger and Parker Silvertip brushes. The bowl is easy to hold either with the knob or just in hand, with the flared opening making it easy to whip up lather without hitting the sides of the bowl with the brush handle. The graphics are understated and attractive although the black color requires a careful wipedown if you prefer not to see...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept but a little too small for me
The bowl is nice and reasonably priced. It has raised notches or bars on the bottom of the bowl which aids in creating a good cream or foam.

I wish it was a little bigger, it is kind of small for my taste.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bottom is too small, June 25, 2011

The fit and finish of this mug is great. The knob is easy to hold and the flared top makes it easy to whip your brush around...

The problem is the base is way to small for most shaving soap replacement pucks. Tabac doesn't fit. Mitchell's Wool Fat doesn't fit.

I wasn't sure how easy it would be to use this mug because the handle isn't a typical loop on the side on the mug. I find it's much easier to use with the type of handle. I also like the large diameter of the lip of the mug. This is a huge improvement over the soap bowl I was using.

I got this for my husband to go with his old time shaver set. It looks great, is the right size and he really likes it. All in all a great present

If you work up your lather in a mug, this is the one to have. I know any dish/mug/empty tin can will do the same trick, but at least this looks good sitting on your bathroom countertop. It also has little notches in the bottom of the mug where your shaving soap will accumulate. It's hard to explain, but because the notches trap the shaving soap you end up using less soap per shave.

5.0 out of 5 stars That Perfect Lather, January 26, 2012

I had been suffering through the standard bowl offered by Van Der Hagen and decided a "real" bowl was in order. After reading reviews in several places, I thought this would be perfect for me seeing I do not use or enjoy soap pucks so had no need for one to fit. I'm typically using Taylor of Old Bond Street and the lather produced using the ridges in the bottom of this shaving bowl is superb! The handle is perfect placed and I love the high open lip. Worth every penny in my opinion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Much too small, much too expensive., January 10, 2012

You are not going to be able to whip up nearly the same amount of lather in this mug as you can using a nice glass Pyrex bowl or other household item. Yes, it looks nice, and the handle is great, but it needs to be at least 50% bigger just to give you enough surface to swirl the brush properly. Skip it unless you just want to go that extra mile in having every part of your shave kit be special.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice mug, January 2, 2012

This is a very classy looking mug. The knob handle makes it very easy and comfortable to hold. The mug has 3 bumps at the bottom that helps producing the lather...which it does well. My only complaint is that the mug is lightweight. It should have some more heft to it.

The price is a little steep for this but if you want to treat yourself that has the Jagger name and will look good on your counter then this mug fits the bill. The only reason I took off 1 star is for the lightweight and the cost.

Update - the mug's bottom is a bit too small (but it IS a mug) to produce great lather. Don't misunderstand me. It does produce abundant lather but the lather could be taken to the next step if the bottom was larger. But if you like making lather in mugs, this will not disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Apothecary-style Shaving Soap Bowl, December 10, 2011
This review is from: Edwin Jagger Rn46 Traditional Black Porcelain Shaving Soap Bowl With Handle, Black (Health and Beauty)
I was having trouble finding a suitable mug for my shaving soap, and saw the apothecary mug discussed on some of the shaving sites so decided to give it a try.

It's got a great shape and the taper towards the top really facilitates soaping the shave brush. The handle is much easier to hang on to than a regular coffee mug. I don't travel with the mug, as I don't want to break it, but it is now an integral part of my daily routine.

I just wish it had some kind of lid to keep the dust out of my shave soap. Other than that, it's perfect!
