Book Description

7 and up
A successful letter-writing campaign, with just a touch of deception.

When Edwina's great-grandaunt and namesake decides to move to a nursing home, Edwina is recruited by her mom to help clean out her aunt's attic. There she discovers a cache of letters from Aunt Edwina, who had been an activist, to various public officials, all requesting improvements in public locations around town. Then Edwina notices a local playground in sorry disrepair and decides to do some letter-writing of her own. She types up her plea, copies her aunt's signature, and mails it to the mayor. Edwina doesnt feel she's being completely underhanded: after all, she is signing her own name, even if the handwriting is forged. And when the mayor responds with fast action -- he hopes for a political contribution from Aunt Edwina -- Edwina begins writing more letters. But it is only a matter of time before she must reveal her true identity, both to the mayor and to her great-grandaunt. Susan Bonners's black-and-white pictures offset a charming story of a regular girl who finds a way to make a difference in her community.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this perky novel for early readers, a girl learns that with gumption (and a little help) she can fight city hallAand win. When an injury forces her wealthy great-grandaunt and namesake to move into a senior residence, young Edwina OsgoodAbetter known to her family and friends as EddyAhelps clean out her aunt's attic. Among the treasures there Eddy discovers an ancient typewriter and a stash of letters written by her aunt to various community officials more than 40 years ago. Inspired by Aunt Edwina's civic efforts, Eddy soon taps out some letters of her own, requesting that the mayor replace a nearby park's broken swings and clean up a vacant lot. But the letters aren't completely her own; Eddy lifts a few choice phrases from Aunt Edwina's correspondence and forges her aunt's signature so that the mayor will think the letters are coming from an adult. Eddy confesses her deception (to the great surprise of the mayor) but still earns kudos all around for the positive changes she has instigated. Bonners's (The Silver Balloon) jauntily paced tale introduces a likable heroine's awakening to community activism and her struggle with issues of honesty without ever getting heavy-handed. Things may fall a bit neatly into place, but young readers will likely see their neighborhoods with new eyes. Ages 7-10. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-When Eddy and her mother clean out great-grandaunt Edwina's house after she moves to a retirement home, they discover piles of letters that the woman had written to public officials over the years. Inspired, Eddy starts writing letters of her own to the mayor. Sure that they'd get more serious consideration coming from her wealthy namesake, she traces her relative's signature on them and uses the nursing home as a return address. Small, positive changes happen in the town, but when the mayor takes steps to secure Edwina Osgood's financial assistance for a new town zoo, the child must admit her involvement as a surrogate social activist. Eddy is a shy but dedicated heroine who loves her town and wants to see it thrive just as her exuberant aunt did years ago. Occasional soft cartoon drawings bring the characters and town to life. This charming tale is an easy fit for lessons on social activism, letter writing, and even plagiarism.
