This review is from: Eenie Meenie Miney Math!: Math Play for You and Your Preschooler (Brown Paper Preschool) (Paperback)
This whole series is so good! Great illustrations and each page chock full of ideas to teach your child in any setting. I play some of these games with my son while we are driving down the road, in the grocery store, at bathtime, etc. Wonderful and fun ideas for even the busiest parents. These authors really know what works with preschoolers!

I agree this book is so outstanding that it is a crying shame that it is no longer published. This is a small paperback filled with colorful, amusing, illustrations and loaded with wonderful and easily implemented math/play ideas for the preschool crowd. It is useful for parents who want to explore the world of math together with their child and have one whale of a good time doing it. It is a wonderful resource for preschool teachers and can be easily adapted to Kindergarten and First Grade Math Curriculum. Anyone who is familiar with the work of Jean Piaget will treasure this book.

Love love love this book. It is full of great, easy ideas for how to support math play in an everyday, easy kind of way. Some of the suggestions are common sense things most parents do with their kids like counting things and matching, but this book takes it further by giving lots of hints about how to make activities more engaging for the youngsters by using everyday materials you have on hand or by making something new and fun out of on-hand supplies. For example, make a spinner out of a pencil and a 3x5 card (ingenius), and how to make storage bins out of used plastic gallon milk cartons (thrifty).
Then there are the math games I'd never heard of or thought of: Cookies that Count (decorating cookies with 1 to 10 chips), Dicey (cereal counting game by pieces or spoonfuls), Teddy Bear Tea (tea party full of counting, measuring, etc.), Hand Pattens (making patterns on a beach/in sand with handprints and found objects), etc. And each game/activity is explained in clear detail, including many different ways to vary it. And along the way the authors explain a huge amount amount numeracy - how kids learn to understand the meaning of numbers and what they symbolize. For a busy mom or dad or caregiver, this is a quick and easy idea book. The index is even sorted in categories to make it even easier to find an appropriate activity for any circumstance: while you wait, in the car, in the kitchen, on your own, one on one, good for a group, quiet time, outdoors... The entire Brown Paper Preschool Book series is THIS good. Highly recommend them if you can find them!
