A crown jewel in Saarinen literature, August 19, 2011
This review is from: Eero Saarinen on His Work (Hardcover)
Of all the literature out there on the life and and work of Eero Saarinen, this one stands out the most. Not just for its beautiful, black-and-white illustrations of individual buildings, but because of the exceptional nature of the text. After Saarinen's death, his widow, Aline B. Saarinen (architecture critic, New York Times), compiled Saarinen's own statements in this volume in 1962. She believed that his own words would provide a more intimate wondow into his own creative processes. She has done this very well. Each of the 16 buildings shown in this book contains vivid descriptions from Saarinen's various interviews, writings, articles and lectures. These are quite detailed, and reveal much about the architect's as well as the client's point of view. One highlight to this book is at the forward with Saarinen's statements about architecture in general and himself. While some of the completion dates on the buildings in this book tend to be off by a year or more ( 10 were in various stages of completion when it went to press), it nonetheless provides a portrait of a fantastic, but short lived career straight from the horse's mouth - a real treat, and a must for any Saarinen or modern architecture enthusiast.
