In the author's new ``Global Villages'' series, a look at the indigenous hunters, also known as Cree, who have lived near Canada's Hudson Bay for 6,000 years. As Siy reports in this straightforward overview, their experience with Europeans parallels what's happened in the US--the introduction of modern tools along with new vices and disease; government scorn for native culture, expressed in paternalistic educational polices until very recently; etc. Ironically, the hydroelectric plant that has flooded millions of acres and devastated the ecosystem also galvanized community organization that might, possibly, mitigate plans for additional construction. Though Siy says little about Eeyou arts, and virtually nothing about the trade and paid employment that must be a component of their modern lives, she presents an upbeat, sympathetic picture of their traditions and values, punctuated with several tales and well illustrated with informative color photos.
