Book Description

July 8, 2012
Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN): 2012912261 The main body of this second edition serves as the counselor training and examination manual of the College of Mental Health Counseling and gives away the secrets of effective counselors and therapists. The practical skills and concepts distilled in the present form, are the contributions of countless colleagues and clients who over the years have challenged the creative energies of the author. Effective Counseling Skills is designed to achieve the primary purpose of making counseling skills public knowledge in the belief that the health of society is improved when counseling is known to the most people. The style of the manual is conversational with numerous examples of the practical wording of therapeutic statements. Major topic areas in the main content include an explanation of the client's personal history, suicide prevention, how to begin and deepen the counseling process, helping the client learn healthy ways of relating, moving the client from childhood to maturity, skills for healing grief, and working with couples who want to make progress with issues of conflict, infidelity, addiction, and other common problems. Practical ways to build and manage a counseling practice are presented. A detailed index and table of contents make the volume easy to use as a guide for both the practitioner as well as people seeking help.

"Wow! At first glance I thought to myself here goes another one of those books that just keeps repeating itself. But no! By the time I reached "The Counseling Session," I began to look for my credit card. This is the best Effective Counseling Skills Text Book I have ever seen. And in just a few days I will have one as well. Thanks for the heads-up, and if anyone out in cycberland hasn't purchased this book, you are missing out."

"When first reading the text I was nervous about remembering everything that I was reading. The more I read the more it made sense and linked all together. I liked how it took you step by step into the situations that you may encounter. It was quite incredible how I would pause to ask a question, to have it answered only a few sentences later."

"The more I read the more it made sense and linked all together. I liked how it took you step by step into the situations that you may encounter. It was quite incredible how I would pause to ask a question, to have it answered only a few sentences later."

The text was written in a very practical way and the essential skills and interventions were well written and laid out in a way that was not too complex to grasp."

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Effective Counseling Skills, Daniel Keeran December 10, 2012
By Jimmie
Format:Paperback
Daniel Keeran, MSW has published his second edition of Effective Counseling Skills, the practical wording of therapeutic statements and processes (Counselor Publishing, Vancouver British Columbia, Canada). Mr. Keeran has practiced several years and written numerous books and papers on the practice of counseling and this wide ranging book offers his insight garnered from years of experience in the counseling field.

The topics that are typically "often seen" dilemmas for many therapist is the content focus of this book. These topics include assessment, suicide, interventions in the counseling process, grief, communication and conflict, couple strategies and ethics. The book is a good generalist view of many of the basic issues that confront therapists on a regular basis but should not be viewed as the definitive work on a particular topic. Many of the sub topics within each chapter have had reams of material devoted to them so they are somewhat limited with what could be provided in such a small overview, but, each section does offer a solid "30,000 foot" view of these areas and is a more that adequate covering of most of the topics. Further, this book is conversational and cites examples of support for different therapeutic statements and processes that can be used in the counseling office immediately.

I would recommend this book as a good outline for not only the new therapist who seeks guidance and direction on possible approaches to work with clients but also to seasoned therapist who want to be brought back to the basics of their work. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all possible techniques or approaches but has filled the goal of providing a good general resource for any counselor.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE reference book for every therapist! December 3, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is THE book that all new counselors and counselors-in-training must read! In addition, this book is just as much for the seasoned therapist. It is the most comprehensive collection of material found in one place.
This book is in an easy to read format, yet it remains professional in the way it is written.

It reviews key counseling skills/techniques and offers suggestions for the seasoned therapist in ways to reword questions and has a plethora of examples of areas to cover and additional questions that could be used during assessments and sessions. This book is an expansive reference guide that covers a variety of current counseling issues.

Mr. Daniel Keeran goes above and beyond by including examples of forms and copies of articles that the therapist can use in personal/private practice as a resource or as marketing/community outreach material.

I will be highly recommending this book to the students I work with for their practicums, for the new therapists that I work with for clinical supervision as well as for those therapists that are transitioning to a private practice.

Thank you, Mr. Keeran for composing such a thorough resource!
