In exhaustive detail William J. Rothwell shows you the hows and whys of succession planning and management in this second edition of his landmark book. Given the general corporate predilection for systems and bureaucracies, top executives and managers of both large and small businesses will revel in the way Rothwell lays out his well-researched plan. His ample how-to lists and charts can be adapted to fit almost any industry. Despite the author's scholarly credentials and depth of information, his writing is not academic. We from getAbstract recommend this book to executives and managers, particularly if your company doesn't already have a succession plan.

Rothwell provides not only an excellent review of the current literature but countless worksheets for practice. If you are interested in succession planning issues this book is a must. I would also recommend "The Leadership Pipeline" by Charan, Drotter, & Noel. And buy a copy of "Strategic Organizational Learning" by Beitler. Beitler has several free articles on his website "[...]" that are also helpful.

The need for succession planning is reaching crisis proportions, yet few organizations are willing to face the crisis and do something about it.

There's nothing magic here---just a realistic, comprehensvie, flexible approach to get the job done. The strenghts in this book:

- Finding the right devleopmental activity for the right level of management

- Design, gain support, and implement, and maintain your succession process.

- Lots of extras, including assessments and a plan to devleop a mentoring program.

A great value.

Rothwell's book is one of the more comprehensive and well researched books covering this growing topic. It includes a wealth of information following all of the major steps of the Succession Planning process. The book contains useful worksheets and task process flows that allow a reader to rapidly introduce the core concepts into their organisation. A great resource.

I concur with Mr. Dell of Boston, although the exigencies of contemporary business publishing make errors of that nature all but inevitable due to revision schedules, quick-to-market requirements and even the sheer number of editorial and advisory hands a book like this one goes through. Beyond that, Dr. Rothwell's classic is particularly useful to someone like me involved with multiple but related and sometimes parallel industries. My library contains a number of texts of this nature and subject, and my utilization is often differential in focus, with Rothwell being the standard in most situations. I appreciate the pragmatism of his examples and his insights, both objective and subjective. He knows the value of intuition, as simply another rational decision-making mechanism, despite widespread discounting and even suspicion. Recommended.

Given the importance of this topic especially for senior management, I have been researching about it for some time. I found this Succession Planning book by Dr. Rothwell book to be comprehensive, up-to-date and practical. I found the CD to be a very useful addition to this book. I started to apply some key concepts from this book such as Technical Succession Planning, Social Network Succession Planning , the CEO's Role in Succession Planning and The Managers Daily Role and it has brought tremendous benefit to my organisation. I would highly recommend this book to professional who are serious about enabling successful succession planning programs.

I am a nurse in masters leadership and management program. I found this book, at the time having only read a few pages I have found that it has and will serve as a bible for me. Nurse leadership not only lacks diversity but it also fails to put succession planning in place to ensure that excellence in nurse leadership is maintained. Hopefully with the evidence in this book I will be able to support my theory that in the future planning for leadership positions is imperative. Good reading

I bought this book to help with my transition to a director's position at a nonprofit organization. It contains very useful and concrete ideas, in addition to case studies from different organizational types (i.e., an example of succession in public agency, a non-profit organization, etc.). I would definitely suggest this book for anyone thinking of systematizing succession.

This book + CD will make the Succession Planning a funny task to perform. It is a tool rather than a theory. Arm your arsenal with it and achieve a superior position in Succession Planning.

This is an excellent working and resource book. Dr. Rothwell hit a homerun with this book and the included CD with forms is invaluable. Well done and worth the money
