5.0 out of 5 stars Multi-Genre Lo-Fi, May 23, 2002

This review is from: Effete Coquette (Audio CD)
I first came across this artist on MP3.com. I've stayed closely posted to their every move ever since. While many may be turned off by lo-fi music (lo-fi, by the way, does not = bad), I was compelled by the Nabokov Project's range and depth on "Effete Coquette." There are no mainstream artists who can successfully manage to bridge this many musical genres and still deliver a solid product. This album stretches from experimental, folk, punk, rock, to hardcore-weird without missing a beat while managing to produce a debut that offers much hope for future releases. These songs are political and practical. They resonate with a musical and lyrical force that most bands fear in that they never stray away from the tough issues of our times: suicide (White Pill Taken), rape (the Gift), class exploitation (Josh Land's Last Dream), death/loss (Ted's Song) and first-world apathy (at the punk rock show). While these songs are far from perfect, I fear that the world would be a lesser place without these tunes in its cultural matrix. This is a project worth paying serious attention to. By the way, the instrumentals ?Japanese Pop? and ?Dramatic Music from the Unmade Movie? are to die for. Worth the listen/purchase to any lo-fi, alt/post-rock fan.
