Words from a well respected Australian(not mine), April 4, 2000

" In WA early nineties, a three piece band were rapidly growing a reputation round the traps for some catchy tunes deeply rooted in pop sensibilities, yet inflicted with hard edge guitar. In 1997 with the release of their self titled debut, Effigy gained some well deserved national recognition. Coupled with being Triple J darlings and receiving frequent airplay for the catchy single 'Lovers', the path was cleared in 1998 for the second album 'Century Collapsing'. This is an album that possesses all the trade marks of being 'BIG'. From the opening track 'Heart Disease', the difference is immediate. Using a much wider range of instruments, frontman Peter Hardman and Mavis's producer Kalju Tonuma have created some music that should give king pumpkin Billy Corgin some sleepless nights. The quasi punk riffs are still evident but have made room for some strings, slide guitar and harmonica. The overall sound is softer and has somewhat lost the raw energy of the first album, but this is the sign of a maturing band. Tracks such as 'If Somethings Gonna End' is a roller coaster lulling you with soft strings and a gorgeous lilting rhythm, then kicking in with some riffs any garage band would be proud of. Many will mistake bassist Cobina Crawford as vocalist, however the sweetness and venom belongs to Hardman. Some may find the effeminate vocal quality takes a little getting used to, however the style suits the music and is right at home with the bitchy lyrics. Put this one aside if your considering a serious relationship. Having worked the album on Triple J with singles, 'Suspicion Bells' and 'Caught' and having toured with Mavis's and Even, the sad fact is that Effigy are now no longer. Citing 'personal differences', each member has gone their separate ways. This is an album that reeks of potential talent put together by a band that cried out to be noticed." By Justin Oliver.
