Respiratory Therapy at its finest,
By Christopher R. Thomas (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care (Book with Study Guide) (Paperback)
The Egan's manual for respiratory therapy is the most benificial learning tool and reference manual that I have come across in all of my career. The information in this book is not only easy to understand but layed out in a manner that makes finding what you need an easy task. It gives a thorough review of all the important clinical data and physical characteristics needed to become a competent practitioner. The information in this book is explained in a very simple form which makes it easy to understand and retain the material that is covered. I would recommend this book as a refence tool to any student pursuing a career as a nurse, respiratory therapist, or physician. While this book may apply specific emphasis to the respiratory related field, it will reinforce your nursing or medicinal background by examining disease processes from a cardiopulmonary standpoint. This book has been a valuable learning tool and greatly aided me in both respiratory and nursing related classes and God willing as medical student. Best wishes to all and I hope you enjoy your read.

Egan's is comprehensive, detailed and easy to understand.,

Egan's is the bible of all respiratory text books. In my opinion, it is a "must have" textbook for any respiratory care practitioner. I am a military trained respiratory technician and have come to realize that anything and everything that you need fundamentally as an RT is provided in this text. Gas laws, mechanical ventilation, pharmacology, chest physiotherapy and more; it's all in Egan's.

It's large, but much better for students than other books,
This review is from: Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care (Book with Study Guide) (Paperback)
Ok, the book is huge, but My first 2 semesters of school we had a different book and I struggled with it. This book is great because it incorporates the AARC guidelines and it discusses not only how therapies work but how to instruct patients as well as hazards. This book can take the place of having to buy 3 separate respiratory books.

A reference, not a great textbook.,

I don't know why so many people rate this book so highly.
We had to buy it when we were RT students, but it was not that helpful. It is a reference for people who already understand the concepts. As a textbook for learning, it is really bad. The way it is written, you wonder of the writer has a pulse. It is so dry, with no attempt to make the reader understand the concepts behind the voluminous information. Without comprehension, you are sure to quickly forget the dry data presented. It was not used much by our class, yet every one of us was required to have this massive book in our backpack, in addition to many others books. This is a heavy book. A single Egan's that stayed in the classroom and that was available to the students would have been enough. You want the greatest respiratory care textbook ever written? Get Clinical Practice in Respiratory Care by James B. Fink and Gerald E. Hunt. Gerald Hunt was one of the respiratory care teachers at Butte College, in Oroville, CA, where I graduated from. Unfortunately he left just before I entered the program, but his knowledge was legendary. After he left he finished this textbook. I read his textbook, cover to cover, a few years after I graduated. Wow. I wish we had this book when I was a student. When I am king, this will be the main textbook in all respiratory care programs.

Big Heavy Book Full of Info...,
By Kadamae (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care, 8e (Hardcover)
If you were to add a chapter on anything that may be perceived as missing, you will turn this already massive chunk of wood into something the size of a CPU. I already hate lugging it around. The only way to improve on the size is to split the material into sections sell it as a similarly priced hard or soft cover set. Then we can add the chapter on TB, sure. Knowing my instructors they'd all be coming to class every day anyways. My only complaint is the weight.
The content is direct, concise, not overly boring, understandable even when this was new and after a couple of years, I'm glad I have the reference still. The order and organization is not what I would have chosen. I knew people who cut the thing up in sections and carried chapters/sections around in report folders... It is BIG. But it is the best. The only other basic reference/text on the subject out there that even compares is Kacmarek's Essentials, it's smaller... LOL. Kacmarek is actually co-writer of the new 2008 Egans. I would definitely be interested in any new publications by these authors solely on manifestation/process of respiratory disease. That has potential! Thanks for reading my review!

Very good, only lacks a chapter on TB,

I find Egan's very useful, especially in detailing all the physiopathologic mechanisms lying under mechanical ventilation.
Good are also the chapters on respiratory infections, and on respiratory pharmacology. I only would have expected a chapter on TB, which lacks at all, but maybe this wuould have required extended explanations and the Authors preferred putting it apart. Very good anyway !

This book is the friggin' respiratory care bible of books!!! i don't know why colleges make u buy new books each term for the respiratory program, they should just issue u this. i was struggling heavily in my class reading the incomprehensible books they assigned me. i bought this along with the workbook for it, said to heck with my instructor's lectures and books, and just read this book. i now have an "A" in the class so that should tell u something. make sure u get the workbook for this, as this was the part that just sent my grade thru the roof, the author is funny and helps u out alot.

I am a respiratory therapy student with background in nursing. This textbook has generous amounts of useful information. The chapters are well structured with ample diagrams, photographs, AARC guidelines, critical thinking boxes, and numerous charts. I have found it a great source for respiratory concepts. The only drawback is certain assessment parameters and crucial information buried within the text that is not bold type -- but should be. This makes it difficult to use as a quick reference. Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care will not be sold after this course is over. I will be adding it to my personal library of clinical reference books.
