5.0 out of 5 stars praying mantids
I ordered these egg cases to put a little security surveillance on a weeping cherry tree that was almost destroyed by Japanese beetles last year. I went on a trip for 2 weeks, and when I got back I had tiny little praying mantids all over the tree. Can't wait to see what happens when those beetles show up this year!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't order from Hirt's!
I purchased the praying mantis egg cases for my daughter. We put them into our mantis habitat and patiently waited for the babies to "hatch". Apparently I was sent duds because the babies never came. What a disappointment for my daughter. When I contacted the seller, the customer service was horrible and they would not acknowledge my problem. Do not order from this...

5.0 out of 5 stars fun and beneficial, June 13, 2008
This review is from: 2 Egg Cases Chinese Praying Mantis 100 - 400 Babies
This is a great purchase. Our family enjoys watching the mantis egg cases hatch, and they are so beneficial for the garden. A true wonder of nature to see all those little praying mantis all over the tree like tiny staples.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, May 16, 2008

I purchased these for my kids and for my garden. The first egg "sack" hatched after about 3 weeks. That was really cool and the kids were very excited. Sadly they wouldn't eat anything we put in with them and most died. We had the tiny flies and I bought special water packets for bugs. We released some of them and I hope they are still alive. I am still waiting for the second set to hatch. We have a mantis box in the window so it will get a lot of warmth.

Follow up: the second sac of eggs never hatched. All of the mantis from the first set died. If you are going to hatch these, make sure you can get a supply of really small bugs first. I have been told that they will eat hamburger as well.

I live in Zone 10. It's really not good with dry heat. If you live in humid heat. Go for it. Don't get it if you live in Arizona. It won't work without a humidity controlled glass house.

I placed my egg case outside in an azalea bush and a few weeks later, sure enough, teeny-tiny mantids starting pouring forth from the case. I moved a couple to another area of the garden, and was able to track one's growth for a few weeks until he disappeared one day. It was SO amazing. I saw him catch 2 flies, I watched him molt....I hope a bird didn't eat him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Praying Mantis, March 14, 2011

Though the egg cases looked unchanged our yard was full of praying mantis. We live in Arizona. It takes at least a month for the temperature to be right but they came out from both egg cases. They eliminated the white flies, aphids, ants and other undesirable pests. We are ordering more for this year. Worked out great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Mantids!, December 4, 2010

I ordered 2 praying mantis egg sacs from Hirts. One we hatched right away in a butterfly hut. Since it was winter it took six weeks for them to hatch. I tried to feed them but none lived. They would not even eat each other for survival. The next egg sac we took out of the refrigerator in the spring, approximately 2 weeks before the last spring frost. I put this in the butterfly hut also. This egg sac took 2 weeks to hatch and when it did I took it immediately outside to my vegetable garden. It was so fun during the summer to happen upon one of the growing mantids. By the end of the summer I only had one or two left but I had 90 percent less bugs in my garden this year. My biggest pests, the asparagus beetle and the squash beetle, never stood a chance! I have not found an egg sac in my garden so I plan to buy more egg sacs this spring. This is the best experiment my kids and I have ever done! I had no idea how successful it could be!
