Editorial Reviews

Review

"Greg Heffley and Ellie McDoodle, move over—Aldo Zelnick is here!"  —Mary Lee Hahn, 4th grade teacher and notable children's books committee chair for the National Council of the Teachers of English

"One of the most remarkable things about these books is the voice of Aldo, which rings true from every page. The hilarious drawings enhance the text with jokes and visual humor that make Aldo's personality pop."  —Rebecca McGregor, Picture Literacy, Inc.

"This is a book that definitely speaks 'kid speak.' The first installment of an A-to-Z series, this is perfect for reluctant readers. It's fun for kids and will be appreciated by parents and teachers for the amusing 'back door' approach to enriching vocabulary. Look out Wimpy Kid!"  —Stacy Morris, Katy Budget Books, Kids' Next Winter 2010-2011 nomination

"Egghead" by Karla Oceanak is the fifth book in a series that will eventually cover the whole alphabet. Aldo Zelnick in the narrator. He is 10 years old, very bright, and doesn't like Spanish.

I dislike books that talk down to children. Children are smart and books should treat them that way. Thank goodness Ms. Oceanak agrees with me! This was such a fun book to read. It is fun to "read" Aldo's journal as he deals with learning Spanish and getting ready for Halloween. The cool thing about this book is that the author likes to put in a lot of words that start with "E," put an asterisk next to the word, and then put the definition in the back of the book. Along the way we learn a little bit of Spanish. Aldo is an "A" student, except in Spanish where he pulls a "D." His best friend, Jack, is bilingual and tries to help Aldo. Aldo has a vivid imagination and it shows through all the little drawings and side comments that he makes throughout the book.

I would highly recommend this book for kids ages 8 or 9 up. Aldo is a blast to hang out and it never hurts that the reader may learn a few new things along the way.

The jokes and laughs are as strong as ever in the latest Aldo Zelnick story. I found my vocabulary expanding yet again as Egghead focuses on "E" words. This book also explores several Spanish terms, which continues to enrich the cultural depth of the series in the same way as Dumbstruck's integration of sign language. The science experiments also called back to the joys of earlier books, such as the potion experiment from the very first book, Artsy-Fartsy. I found Egghead to touch on more topics than the previous books have, and I believe this does a nice job of reflecting the accumulated complexities we all experience as we grow older (especially around the age of 10). I would highly recommend Egghead and the entire Aldo series to kids in elementary school or middle school. I also would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun read that puts your own vocabulary to the test.

The latest of the Aldo Zelnick series is sure to captivate readers. Egghead is a unique addition to the Aldo Zelnick series. As a way of celebrating the 50th anniversary, homage is paid to the timeless classic A Wrinkle in Time. Karla and Kendra do a great job of incorporating parts of the novel. Be sure to check out Bacon Boy in his own rendition of the classic! Egghead is jam-packed with exciting events like Halloween, Spanish class drama, best friend troubles, mysterious happenings, and even science experiments that kids are sure to love. Aldo has to decide what to be for Halloween, learn when to apologize, and how to do better in school.

My 11 year-old cousin really enjoyed the series. I am looking forward to sharing Egghead with my 8 year-old sister who is always looking for new things to read.
