The second book in this series is a fairly good read...the characters are believable (for the most part) and the who dun it is intriguing....who is targeting employees of a local funeral home? There are several possibilities....The leading character Suzanne has one group of suspects in her sights, the local sheriff has another. Rural drug ring? Hostile corporate takeover by a national funeral home consortium?? Love triangle??? Key man insurance payoff for the remaining partner???? Ancy of these are possibilities. I won't insert a spoiler but will say the plot resolves in a particularly abrupt and totally unexpected manner. This is fine with me...I don't usually try and solve the mystery but generally have a pretty good idea and this took me totally by surprise....my problem is that there is no explanation as to motive. Believe me when I say that neither Suzanne nor the sheriff even had a clue. The problem I found (which prevented a 4 star rating? Way too many plot lines left unresolved and really a totally unexplained motive for murder.

I like the three women who run The Cackleberry Club. In this book, Suzanne goes to the funeral home to deliver the cherry pie the director, Ozzie Driesden, apparently forgot to come back for. When she arrives, she finds him dead on a metal embalming table. Before she gets a good look at the scene, someone knocks her out with chloroform. A friend comes under suspicion and the ladies rally around to help find the real killer. This puts them in harm's way.
The author has done a great job of creating a community the reader cares about. It is a fun cozy mystery series to read. I find myself laughing out loud at times. I can't wait to read the next installment. I highly recommend this book and series.

I like Laura Childs "teashop" mysteries better, but the Cackleberry Club mysteries are fun, too. Keeps you guessing to the end.

The two previous books in this series suggested the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but this one disappoints big time. I won't spoil the ending, but the identity of the murderer is completely unbelievable, probably because the character is barely mentioned at all during the story. Given the way the murders are committed the lack of background story on the murderer leaves you wondering "how could she (oops-gave that away)have killed two strong men in such strange ways. One murder needed specialized knowledge of a mortician's tools and the other involved a lynching.
I like the Tea Shop mysteries by this author, but I don't know if I'll buy another one in this series.

It took me weeks to finish this painfully boring book. The characters were flat, the story was flat, the writing was flat...The mystery was non existing and the only thing being given any detail was the constant mention of food. Read a menu out of your local phonebook. It would be more interesting.

I end each day doing a little relaxing reading. I enjoy light mysteries and this certainly fit that bill. Enough anxious moments without being too frightening. Love these books.

I like all of Laura Childs books. This is only one of the three series she writes. Her books are fun beach reads. Brain candy. I would start from the first book and read consecutively tho' it would make more sense.

This is the second book in the Cackleberry Club mystery series. Suzanne goes to deliver a pie bought at a bake sale to funeral director Ozzie. She finds him on his own embalming table and is knocked out by an unknown assailant. When a friend who was the victim's girlfriend is suspected of the crime, Suzanne begins to investigate on her behalf. Is it the ex-husband of her friend, the mortuary partner, the obnoxious romance novel writer who wants to buy the property, a drug ring, or the corporate funeral company with underhanded techniques which is in tight with the slimy mayor? Or is it someone else entirely? Suzanne begins a tentative romance with a doctor, her first after her husband's death. Overall, I thought this was a much better book than the first in the series and I did not guess who the murderer was. I still find Toni, one of her cofounders of the club to be annoying and Petra, the other founder is still undeveloped. The product references got annoying from time to time, and the author did have the cheek to reference one of her other series books. It was a good cozy mystery and I will read the next in the series which will hopefully continue to improve.
