Wow!,
By "mrbeanrulz" (Concord, NC) - See all my reviews

I went to the store to get Soul's Core back in December of... 97, I guess. They had several Shawn Mullins CDs, and Eggshells was the cheapest, so I got it, as well. Wow!! I have loved this album ever since. It's just... incredible. You can *feel* the music, hear everything he's thinking and feeling in his voice. My favorite are "Two Choices (My Ship)", "Joshua" (I'm writing a play based on this song, actually), "Cycle of Our Souls", "Eggshells" (my when-I'm-deppressed theme song) and "Salt Lake City 1973". The accoustic version of "Shimmer" is excellent, as well, and if you like it you should check out Jeff's Last Dance Vol. I, an album you can purchase from Shawn's independent record label's site. Anyway, if you like bluesy, folky, jazzy accoustic rock, then BUY THIS CD!!! You won't regret it.

Great CD... possibly the best I've ever owned,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eggshells (Audio CD)
Where do I begin...? Shawn Mullins is one of the best singer/songwriters I've ever heard in my entire life... I could listen to this or any of his other CD's all day long and never get tired of them. The songs on this CD give you a lot to think about and if youre anything like me... you'll never wanna take it out of your CD player! I'm extremely happy to have found Shawn Mullins earlier independent labeled records, they are above and beyond what I ever imagined poosible. the most noteable songs on this are Eggshells, Ruth & Mary, Darby's Castle (my favorite song of his), Joshua, (my 2nd favorite) and another noteable would be the accoustic version of Shimmer, this is the way it was supposed to be in the first place... (Shawn and a guitar) great CD!! I recomend it to anyone who enjoys heart felt ballads, and someone who knows that music still involves instruments...

Only Shawn in concert can beat this CD!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eggshells (Audio CD)
Having listened to Soul's Core several times - I heard about his first concert in London - so I went to see him. During this concert he played several songs from Eggshells, and I bought a copy just on the strength of that. Shawn is only known for Soul's Core over here in England, I think the only people who know about Eggshells are the people at that concert and those who heard him live on the radio (and now all my friends!)All I can say about this CD is wow! Shawn is truely at his best with this. Let's hope Sony/Columbia let him do another album like this. Buy this album - and if any Sony representatives are reading this - please release this album over here in England!!!!

One of the Best Albums I've Ever Heard,
By bola "kiva" (USA) - See all my reviews

Put simply, this is probably my all-time favorite album. If you like looking at how Shawn Mullins sounds without all the "produced" new stuff, then get this album. The stripped-down version of "Shimmer" is worth the price alone. Truly one of our best modern-day poets/storytellers.

This is absolutely my all-time favorite album. I can listen to it over and over and over and ... and i mean that. If you like Shawn's new stuff, to me, this is even better. Likable, some fun songs, some serious songs, and great guitar to go with it.

The Best of Shawn,
By Mac Donald (Azusa, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eggshells (Audio CD)
Instead of writing a typical review of this album, I will provide you with five good reasons as to why you should purchase this album:1. On this album, Shawn uses his deep voice and perfectly matched melodies to create a mood and a sound that resonate long after the album in finsihed playing. 2. The lyrics are shatteringly true. This album will relate to those who have had to make difficult choices in life, to those who have fallen in love, to those who have had their hearts broken, to those who are confused with what life has to offer, and to those who feel like they are a lost soul. 3. With each song, the listener becomes more engaged with the lyrical journey. Whether you have heard all of his music or heard none of his music, you will connect with the songs on this album - it IS that good. 4. Track # 12: Shimmer. To those who are fans of Shawn's music already, this version of the song is the reason to run out and buy the album. He plays the song with more heart, and he is more exposed. While he plays this song as it should be played - Shawn, his voice, and his guitar - the listener feels as though they are in the room with him as he is recording the song. 5. When in the right mood, this album and these songs will hit all of the right "notes." Once again, he touches on emotions and feelings that we all feel as though we have felt; he exposes his life with honesty, and he creates a listening experience that is like no other. I urge you to buy this album.

A great album,

I have owned Eggshells for four years and it is I have to say that I still listen to it as much now as I did when I first bought it. The album is an portrait of an artist on the verge of stardom. Shawn's storytelling is highlighted on songs such as Joshua, Johnny, and Drumming Clown. The version of Shimmer is how the song was meant to be heard-without the ghetto drums and lukewarm bass part. Because he is now signed, Shawn will probably not be able to make an album this stripped down again, so buy up.

Right there with Soul's Core,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eggshells (Audio CD)
This 1996 release which preceeded the hit 1998 Soul's Core is Shawn Mullins at possibly his finest.(not including Twin Falls, Oregon from Souls Core) This work seems to represent a "raw" Mullins - speaking intros into some tunes and playing acoustic guitar with no boundaries. He begins to become the storyteller we know on Souls Core with tunes like "Where's Johnny"(a great acoustic upbeat ending), "Darby's Castle"(an awesome tune with an Irish pub feel), "2 Choices"(Mullins telling the world to shove-it), an acoustic version of "Shimmer"(very well done) and what could be the Mullins classic - entitled 'Joshua." "Joshua wraps all his singing/songwriting skills into a song which will stay in your head for days. An absolutel gem in the mold of Dylan and Springsteen with a bit of country flavor. This CD might prove to be the perfect follow-up to Soul's Core - even though it was released earlier. If you enjoy Souls' Core and Shawn Mullin's style - this CD will carry on...no doubt!

Shawn Mullins is one of this century's best balladeers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eggshells (Audio CD)
The music on this album illustrates Shawn's grasp of the ballad for story telling and involving the listener in the stories. Salt Lake City, 1973 is my favorite song on the album. It sums up what most of us know as children. Joshua is another song that made me look back at those adults which had a big affected in my life when I was young. Each of his songs hits a heart string and memory which gives his music on this album an impact not felt when I listen to other artists. Also, the use of the acoustic guitar in the music adds a "down home, in your living room" feeling that I really appreciated. A must have album for all of you ballad lovers.

great social observation,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eggshells (Audio CD)
All through this album, shawn mullins demonstrates is ability to see things for what they really are. In Salt Lake 1973 he sums up what I have known all my life growing up in utah. Sometimes, this part of the country seems to have lost all sense of logical thinking. And the title track has a great catchy hook. Songs like "joshua" and "ruth and mary" tell great stories. I strongly suggest getting this and his other albums "better days" and "big blue sky".
