5.0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece of electronica
everything he touches is gold. ego-trip is probably his best work (inevitable alien nation is very close). his eclectic sound crosses many genre categories but it is pure electronica. a must have for any fan of eletronica!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Keoki's Greatest
This might be an Ego Trip, but it's also a bad trip. It makes it hard to kick back and relax. I know people like to dance to this type of music too, but it may not be worth the energy. There are however a few decent parts on the album, like some of Majick, and parts of Space. Even so, I would steer clear of this and get something better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keoki rules!, July 22, 2000
This review is from: Ego Trip (Audio CD)
I first started listening to Keoki with the release of Disco Death Race 2000. That was one of my first techno CDs, and I still listen to it. I've been getting his stuff ever since.

One of the things I respect about Keoki as a musician is that, despite the "Superstar DJ" moniker, he doesn't approach his music like he thinks every bleep he creates is going to make you swoon. He makes sure his music is interesting from first beat to last.

In contrast, a lot of recent techno seems to consist of tracks that are 'dubbed out', which to me is a euphemism for bad mixing and muddy sound quality. Much of the rest consist of a loop that isn't interesting for a minute - let alone eight. When Keoki makes long tracks, he's got the ideas to keep them afloat. And his sound quality is always first rate. Because of these things, you end up wishing his songs would keep on thumping forever!

Regardless of what you think of Keoki, I can't see how anyone could deny that this CD is what great techno is all about. He has an easily recognized sound. Each track is unique but they all have powerful beats, high energy, wild sounds/samples, housey chants - what more could you want from this type of music?!?

Tracks are joined together as if it were a mix CD, but the material is all original. You can listen to it or just dance, either way it works. I love speeding down the freeway to "Wicked" and "Crash". I could dance for hours to "Blow". And "Caterpillar" is still as great as listen as it was when it came out (how many years ago??).

This is one of my favorite techno CDs. His over the top production and energy level are irresitable. (Plus, I think he's sorta cute, though you can't tell by the photos on this one). "Give me a big kiss!"

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most overlooked and best techno cd's out there., June 12, 2003
This review is from: Ego Trip (Audio CD)
This cd was truly innovative for the time period, also Keoki was trying to accomplish what no other DJ had really done before, become a superstar by singing instead of dj'ing. (Enter Miss Kittin) Put this together and he would have been very succesful. Unfortunately MTV never found Keoki airworthy and he is now bitter and pretty much out of the scene. :(

Ok, not really, but this is one amazing cd. Keoki is really really popular right now electronica-wise, but I think this is great to get even if you are new to the genre. Keoki uses really interesting and unique vocal samples, which is rare. Even if you aren't mesmerized by his beats (which are something by themselves), then you can entertain yourself w/ the lyrics, particularly in song 3 "me": do me, suck me like me chew me....the whole song is like that. the best track though in my opinion is "crash" because he uses such great effects. There is a siren mixed in...and the song has an awesome beat. plus the very last song on the record is "catepiller", one of keoki's better-known peices of work. "Ego-Trip" is a must for any electronica fan! Buy it and you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, December 30, 2000
This review is from: Ego Trip (Audio CD)
I have been into "techno" for awhile now, and listen to all kinds, from drum and bass to trance. I heard about Keoki just a couple of months ago when he DJ'd near me, and I loved him.

This album sounds different than his other stuff, more just electronica/techno over his normal style, making this a good album to have if you are into the more mainstream Chemical Bros. or Crystal Method.

I think of this album as almost the link between mainstream and normal Keoki, people who listen to either should love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars sit back and let it take you in, December 16, 1998

This review is from: Ego Trip (Audio CD)
there are things about keoki that will not let me go. ego trip is one of those albums that has an ability to seduce unawares. it seems harmless and almost benign at times, and then two days later you'll still be hearing him in your head. "people laugh at you, people hate you, but why do they hate you? because they're JEALOUS." (madness) and it takes off from there. relentless. the rhythms are excellent and it's all about loud with heavy bass. bring it on! if you can't do that then headphones are great. it's a whole soul experience. the transition in caterpillar between a heavy bass driven beat to an almost sparkling synth/drum bit is incredible. that one transition makes the whole album worth it. shivers. this is an album well worth the money, even if you don't think you're a fan of 'techno,' you will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars All hail the future of music..........., February 17, 2000
This review is from: Ego Trip (Audio CD)
This is the first CD by DJ Keoki I have ever owned. I soon sought out many others. The origin of my interest on this release is simple; it has a moonshine logo on it. I recently became familiar with their music releases. I have yet to purchase anything from them that I did not want to keep. Buying electronic music is hard if you are a picky music junkie, like I am.

The artist name intrigued me, somewhat, also. I though it to be Asian in origin but I was wrong. The artist is from South America and the name is Hawaiian in origin. Cool. This artist is also a DJ so he is well versed in club music. He also has released DJ mixed CDs under the Moonshine label. But this Keoki CD is all original. So original that I could not believe my ears.

You see, American and European Techno music have a similar sound. Whether it is trance or house techno, euro/american electronic music has a specific format that it follows. I thought I knew what to expect; that was my first mistake. Upon actually listening to the CD I had the sudden realization that this was like nothing that I had ever heard before. This does not seem to follow any recognizable format. Which means only one thing; this is a new format. Well, it looks like Moonshine has made another breakthrough in electronic music. A record company can do stuff like that when they are independent.

If you do not like it at first, give it a chance to grow on you. I had to listen through it three times before I really understood what I was hearing. The audio joy soon followed. The best tracks on the CD are #7) Space; an awesome ballad about the personal cosmos, #4) Crash; this one is like mambo music on acid in zero gravity, and #9) Caterpillar; I could not explain this track if I tried. The track list order on this page is not completely accurate. Trust Me.

This CD has amazing output. I mean it will move your speakers. This ain't no elevator music. Don't even bother with this CD if you like to listen to your music through a clock radio. You get the idea.

I have been a fan of Techno music for ten years. With all the record labels out there trying to align themselves with the underground only a few set trends rather than follow them. This release is proof that record companies do not shape the future of music, the artists do. In my humble opinion, this is the future of music. Smaller record labels using their versatility to put out better music over the net. Between Kypnotic, Antler-Subway, and Moonshine: Electronica's future is secure.

However, I could be completely full of it. Don't just take my word for it beacase I write lengthy boaring reviews. Check out this CD and decide for yourself what it is all about. Oh, and have a `Happy Hardcore' day. :)

All hail the man and his imajination. This CD will take you on a trip and bring you back a changed person. At least it did for me anyway. This was my first Moonshine CD and was my first trip into the realm known as - techno.....

This is truely a masterpiece in it's own kind, telling a story in a not so verbal way, very subtle. The cover is what lured me in, as it did others that I have spoken with. This CD is definetly a timeless work of art and is highly recommended and a sure pleaser. Buy it, because you should have it already.
