Editorial Reviews

Explicit Version of Ego Trippin' by Snoop Dogg. Iconic in stature and in essence, Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr. has carved out a permanent place in musical history. Undeniably, the Rapper, producer, actor, entrepreneur, coach, husband and father affectionately called Snoop Dogg, has performed the most unique balancing act that Hip Hop has ever witnessed. Never short on vision, drive or ambition, the C-walking, sharp talking wordsworth has managed to redefine and reinvent himself over the course of his fifteen year career, each time revealing a distinctive cache from the depths within. His rhythmic cadences are classic in nature and his demeanor is as laid back and effortless as the brand extensions he has created for himself.

First things first, EGO TRIPPIN' isn't as good as Snoop's last album, THA BLUE CARPET TREATMENT. Also, it isn't a bad album by any means either - just a flawed album. Sure, "Sensual (Sexual) Seduction" gave Snoop his first top-ten hit since 2004's ubiquitous Neptunes helmed "Drop It Like It's Hot" reached #1 (not counting Akon's #1 with Snoop, "I Wanna F**k You"), but "Sensual Seduction" isn't enough to make EGO TRIPPIN', which is pretty good, a truly great or innovative album. Sure, Snoop rocks the vocoder out on "Sensual Seduction", but a vocoder doesn't make up for some of EGO TRIPPIN' laxer moments.

The album starts with the typical forgettable interlude, then follows with "Press Play", which is ultimately forgettable as well. Snoop ignites the flame with "SD is Out", an undeniably catchy track in which you feel Snoop is at least somewhat in his element. Sure, it isn't the second coming by any means, but it works. "Gangsta Like Me" follows in the same boat as "SD is Out" - it is catchy, though not as great as some of the best songs appearing on 2006's THA BLUE CARPET TREATMENT. Similarly still, "Never Have 2 Worry" is solid, though not earth shattering. The background vocals are fantastic here and Snoop does still sound "relevant" if not 100% fresh this round. Finally, "Sexual Eruption" (or "Sensual" depending on the version), comes and revives some sense of true, inspired vitality within EGO TRIPPIN'. It is followed by another excellent track, "Life of Da Party" which features inspired guest turns from several rappers, with the standout being Too $hort. Snoop sounds like he has salvaged his image on this track more so than the earlier tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE WEST COAST IS BACK March 11, 2008
Format:Audio CD
GREAT CD!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe K. Hood "Rayfellet" said it best.
This album is snoops best next to doggy style. It has such an original sound throughout the album. DJ Quik, Snoop and Teddy Riley have made a masterpiece
1. (A Word Witchya!) 5/5 Smooth intro
2. (Press Play) 5/5 So so, funky. Quik did it on this track
3. (SD Is Out) 5/5 Good follow up to press play, HUGE BASS!
4. (Gangsta Like Me) 4/5 classic Snoop, with a twist
5. (Neva Have 2 Worry) 2/5 song gets tired and is a biography song
6. (Sexual Eruption) 4/5 Radio song obviously, Love the Roger Troutman touch with the voice box.
7. (Life of da Party) 3/5 Good bass, Dance cut.
8. (Waste of Time) 5/5 Smooth track, very well produced
9. (Cool) 4.5/5 This a great cover to an epic 80's track
10. (Sets Up) 2/5 Weak track, very repetitive.
11. (Deez Hollywood) 4/5 Classic old scooh sound.
12. (Whateva U do) 5/5 Diss song to many! Good production!
13. (Staxxx In My Jeans)3/5 Gangsta Gangsta, takes me back to Topp Dawg.
14. (Been Around tha world) 5/5 clean bass and a fresh sound.
15. (Let It Out) 4/5 Fun track.
16. (My Medicine) 5/5 SNOOP DONE COUNTRY! It works too!
17. (Ridn In My Chevy) 2/5 Too Dirrrty south for snoop.
18. (Those Gurlz) 5/5 Classic Cali Beat. Sun is shining on this track!
19. (One Chance) 5/5 smooooooooooooth.
20. (Why did you Leave Me) 2/5 Clean track, but very very very whiny.
21. (Can't Say Goodbye) 4/5 Sounds a bit like 2pac's Changes.
All in all this is a smooth album with excellent production. The album as a whole is amazing and creative. When is DJ Quik putting out an Album?

1.0 out of 5 stars Crushed Ego March 20, 2008
Format:Audio CD
To Snoop: You did well with giving us Blue Carpet Treatment, but on this one your ego got the best of you and the worse of our pockets. I believe you put a lot into it, but with the wrong producers. You should have stuck with Dr. Dre. I know you are the type to help out everybody and we all know that Teddy Riley and DJ Quick could use a dollar, but you have a reputation to live up to. I'm yawning on this one.

To the fans- I am not sure if you will like this one. Maybe one or two songs are good out of 21 that's on there. That is bad. This album was a waste of studio time. Sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars time to retire June 16, 2008
Format:Audio CD
snoop dogg is a legend in rap with out a doubt. when he first came on the scene no one could deny his flow and delivery. he's been around for a while and seen many acts come and go. when i read the snoop cover xxl magazine and discovered he didnt even write his own lyrics on ego trippin and said "aritha franklin didnt write her songs and shes an icon why he cant do that". i lost respect for snoop, hollywood and reality tv has obviously gotten to him

It's been more than 15 years since Snoop Dogg stepped on the scene. He's had his fair share of ups and downs, as he illustrates on ""Never Have 2 Worry" from his ninth studio album Ego Trippin'. But LBC's musical ambassador has weathered the storm and is almost as popular as when he first came out. And with Ego Trippin', Snoop does whatever he wants to do, a formula that seems to be his preference on many of his later albums. "Sexual Eruption" is the surprise hit that flashes back to the funk ballads of yesteryear and features Snoop singing on most of the song, with the only rap being a minuscule verse towards the end of the track. He continues this trend on the cover of The Time's "Cool," a move that was probably prompted by collaborating producer Teddy Riley. Everlast offers some assistance on the country-themed track "My Medicine." He still reps the West Coast on songs like "Press Play" (featuring Kurupt for the chorus and ad libs and DJ Quik on the boards), "Life of The Party" with Oakland's own Too Short and Mistah F.A.B.), and "Waste Of Time" with Oakland's own Raphael Saadiq for vocals and production.. But Snoop Dogg wouldn't be who he is without stepping outside of his comfort zone to embrace other sounds. He journeys to the Dirty South with the mediocre "Staxxx In My Jeans," reps the streets on "Ridin' In My Chevy" and gets a little too far out with Pharrell on "Sets Up." Some of his 'female friendly' tracks would be "Been Around The World," "One Chance (Make It Good)" and "Those Gurlz." ""Can't Say Goodbye" is the closing track that serves as an retrospective of his growth as a man, father, husband and artist. One thing that can be said about Ego Trippin' is that Snoop Dogg performs an array of material for the masses, not just one segment. Read more ›
