Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5 and up, younger for reading aloud. Giovanni has added 10 new poems to her acclaimed 1973 collection of 23 poems for young people. Ford's illustrations in sepia shades are bold and full of character and dreaming. As Virginia Hamilton says in her foreword, Giovanni's voice is personal and warm, she "celebrates ordinary folks" and writes of struggle and liberation. She's upbeat and celebratory without minimizing hard times. The publisher doesn't indicate which are the new poems, but, certainly, any library that doesn't have the original title will want to buy this one. These are poems that sing. Giovanni says, "if i were a poet / i'd kidnap you," and that's what she does. Hazel Rochman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first book of Poems!!!!!!!!!, February 20, 2001
My mother gave this book to me when I was 11 and it had a profound impact on my life. I have recited the EGO-Tripping poems more than I can remember. My greatest joy came when I heard Nikki Giovanni recite it in person. I would reccomend this book to any young African American boy or girl as an introduction to poetry, it is truly a work of art!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for the middle school classroom, May 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
From the perspective of a middle school ELA teacher, I thought this compilation was a tad dated, being that the author emphasizes a pro-Panther attitude that hearkens back to the publishing date (1973). I was hoping for something interesting and edgy I could use in my 80%+ African-American school. Not quite what I was hoping for...there isn't much here in terms of literary terms or poetic techniques I could highlight and the writing was quite stale.
