great book for beginners of Ancient Egypt,
By
This review is from: Egypt and the Egyptians (Hardcover)
This book, whose chapters are organized topically, presents important aspects of ancient Egypt. It covers the history, cities, government, geography, language, beliefs, art, architecture, tombs, religion, monotheism, gods, society, marriage, entertainment, dress, jewelry and the Nile river. The authors also discuss the ancient Egyptians' beliefs in life and their conception of death. Common archaeological and Egyptological terms are explained in the glossary. An excellent bibliography is included. A recommended well-written book, it is most useful for those who know little, if nothing, of this civilization and its people.

Very informative; could have been proofread better.,

I've enjoyed reading the local university's copy of this book. I did run into a couple of jarring typographical errors that a competent human proofreader/factchecker would have caught. The most disturbing of these was the statement that the headwaters of the Blue Nile are at "Lake Tanganyika, high in the Ethiopian plateau". The headwaters of the Blue Nile are at Lake Tana, high in the Ethiopian plateau. Lake Tanganyika is half a continent to the south. Big difference.Except for a couple of these weird typos, it's a very good book. I like Brewer's "Domestic Plants and Animals: The Egyptian Origins" better, though.

Review of Brewer and Teeter's 'Egypt and the Egyptians',

This review is from: Egypt and the Egyptians (Paperback)
This is a wonderful overview of Egyptian history and culture. The authors are very good at moving through broad patterns of reasoning, making great internal connections and contrasts with the information that they present. They also do a great job of comparing Egypt to other ancient cultures. It's hard to demonstrate just how clear and insightful the essays are, but, trust me, this introduction, though fairly devoid of pictures, has a lot to offer.
