4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and convincing--nothing about aliens--not mentioned, September 8, 2010
This review is from: Egypt Exposed: The True Origins of Civilization (DVD)
Remember the last line from The Thing: "Watch the skies!"? That's basically what Robert Bauval is saying in this extended interview, which I found fascinating and utterly convincing. Beginning with his discovery that the three great pyramids of Egypt mirror the size and arrangement of the three stars in Orion's belt, Bauval advocates looking at ancient civilizations with an astronomer's eye to explain those civilizations' behavior. The sky is a book we don't read anymore, he claims. Along the way, Bauval demands science be scientific and not autocratic, which also seems like a modest enough idea. All the ancients looked at the sky, why not the Egyptians? Perhaps his theories can't presently be proved, but I wouldn't bet against them because they fall precisely in line with what science has discovered in my lifetime: ancient civilizations are older than once thought, ancient civilizations are more sophisticated than we once thought, what seemed like crackpot ideas are now common knowledge, the dedicated amateur often sees things the "expert" can't, and ancient civilizations were far more mobile than we once gave them credit for.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Orion Connection, September 29, 2010
This review is from: Egypt Exposed: The True Origins of Civilization (DVD)
The fascination for Egypt and its history has been a constant of humanity. The intention has always been to master the stories found in hieroglyphs, to learn of the dynasties that once dominated. And that intention remains even today--with theories being offered to change the common perceptions.

And, through the lectures of Robert Bauval (author and controversial figure within the archaeological world), such theories are now given to film viewers. In "Egypt Exposed" the connections of stars and pyramids are provided, with Bauval offering engaging--although not entirely convincing--evidence of the true creators of Egyptian culture. Constellations are meant to be the answer to all secrets. They don't, however, entirely fulfill their promises. The hypotheticals given here, though unique, are not supported. Viewers will find their interests piqued but their questions unsolved. This could lead to frustration for some.

"Egypt Exposed" is entertaining. That cannot be denied. It is not, however, for the serious scholar. This is an exercise in conspiracies and speculation. It will intrigue but will ultimately offer no proof.

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Gave Me Food For Thought, September 23, 2010
This review is from: Egypt Exposed: The True Origins of Civilization (DVD)
What I liked about this film was how excited Robert Bauval is in discussing his theories that he feels are facts. He talks about how in the distant past (10,000+ years ago) were men who were geniuses just like Sir Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein, though those wise men of eons ago didn't have science as the more contemporary geniuses did/do. Instead, they expressed themselves, their beliefs, their visions and theories through archeological structures (such as the Great Pyramids), and hieroglyphs that present day science can't fully interpret.

Mr. Bauval goes into great depth exploring the links between the Orion Correlation and the pyramids, as well as many other theories about where human civilization "truly" began. True or not, it was interesting to keep an open mind while watching this film and wonder, "What if?"

I do wish there were more photos to explain what he talks about so it would be easier to comprehend as I'm a very visual person.

1.0 out of 5 stars garbage !!!!!!!, July 29, 2010

im so sorry i purchased this video...bauval may be brilliant as a cutting edge archeologist but his presentation techniques are chaotic and he seems to ramble on about people not giving specifics in just about everything he spoke about. Problem is I cant even figure out what he WAS talking about. the sound quality was poor and the graphics even worse...pictures were shown with no rhyme or reason and absolutly no explaination or how they connected with what bauval was rambling about...he started to talk about the first time and then got lost with how his idea upset alot of people and the rest was just plain nonsense...then somehow the video starts talking about robin hood....what????
the music was horrible...some head bangers screaming while i desprestly tried to find the beginning of bauvals lecture....should have known right from there that it was going to be downhill from there....dont waste you money....burn it first before you purchase this video

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Mainstream Ancient History Critics, September 1, 2011

This review is from: Egypt Exposed: The True Origins of Civilization (DVD)
After a rational educated person reads the other critiques of the best mainstream academic Ancient history, Arceology and Anthropology theories (which are presented with arrogant authoritative voice), Robert Bauval is a breath of rational fresh air. He indeed follows the evidence. An unusal civil engineer of unusually unique origins, Bauval is rational from start to finish. Unlike, his fellow critics of mainsteam history, Bauval doesn't dive off planet with an outer space evidence bending theory of his own. He doesn't seem bent on creating a pagan religion apparantly grounded in very ancient history.

In a nutshell, Bauval does a better job that the comfortable academics working from their ivory tower office easy chairs. Bauval does their work for them and yet they want to simply reject his work. Bauval rightfully questions the Experts depiction of Egyptian culture and history. First, he questions the the vain Pharoah built pyramids for themselves, then he actually bothers to read and study the many texts in the small pyramids. Bauval is science based and years of Civil Engineering projects gave him worldly experience enough to figure the alignment of the great pyrmids is no accident. He criticizes the big holes in the Experts conclusions about the Pyramids and Egyptian culture and civilization and he offers a better one that is fact, material evidence and scientifically based.

The DVD presentation of Bauval's book "Egypt Exposed" is excellent. It is inappropriately marketed as a "movie". It's no movie. Its a documentary that largely consists of a mock interview of Bauval. I found it excellent and I recommend it but unless you are seriously interested in the subject, it is certainly not entertainingly presented like the multi-episode TV show "Ancient Aliens" or even as entertaining as any of the cable TV UFO Hunter type shows. For people who would or have read the book, this DVD is consuming.

I strongly recommend the video but if you are expecting something entertaining like Ghost Hunters or UFO Hunter, you may be disappointed with this presentation. I liked it a lot but I wasn't looking to be entertained.

Simply produced, but fascinating discussion of the inspiration behind the unique size, placement and design of the Pyramids of Giza. I was immediately drawn in.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Alternative History, October 7, 2010
This review is from: Egypt Exposed: The True Origins of Civilization (DVD)
This film really makes you question how much of hat we learned in history class was true and how much wasn't thoroughly researched. Of course, as with many of these conspiracy type documentaries, it is completely up to your own interpretation. The documentary features Robert Bauval, who also directed the film and is a well-known figure in the world of "alternative history" theorists. The film presented some interesting evidence to question the roots f civilization but I have to say the film got off to a bit f a slow start. The biographical introduction of Bauval was a tad lengthy but it does pick up after that. Archaeology, anthropology and Egyptology enthusiasts, as well as conspiracy theorists will all enjoy this microscopic look at civilization.

The old canard about the Sphinx having been built 10k years ago - or 10k years BCE - has been around a long time. It's no more valid now than it was then. Archaeological evidence and Egyptian records confirm that it's an Old Kingdom structure contemporary with the nearby pyramids.

The pyramids were, of course, not built by Martians or whatever little green/grey men you choose, nor by people from the fictional land of Atlantis. (Yes, fictional - Aristotle blew the whistle on that one centuries ago.) Again, archaeological evidence is conclusive. For instance, construction gang graffiti, mentioning Khufu by name, are found in Khufu's pyramid on stones installed so that they have to be dug out in order to see the writing.

The origin of Egyptian civilization occurred (surprise, surprise) in Egypt. Ancient remains and other evidence of its formative stages abound along the Nile. Characteristics of Egyptian civilization found further down in Africa don't prove the usual silliness about Egyptian civilization being founded by Africans. In fact, Egyptian cultural influence passed into sub-Saharan Africa by way of Kush (not called the Sudan). The Kushite kingdom - which developed far later than Egypt - adopted Egyptian writing, customs, and other cultural goodies. From Kush many of these things passed further south.

Of course, if you cherry-pick your evidence and make wildly extravagant interpretation of what you cherry-picked, you can "prove" anything. This isn't to say that archeological orthodoxy has always been wrong - but the sorts of unscientific nonsense promoted by this DVD is always wrong.

Go get a good modern book on Egyptian civilization and forget this merde.
