This book needs an update. It's from 2000 yet there is a distinct lack of analysis (even adjusted for history, I realize it takes years for academia to catch up with current events) until the reign of Mubarak. Also, I didn't quite see enough discussion of the parallel societies such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic extremist groups in response to the issue of social justice and the future of Egypt. Very easy to read surprisingly and short too. This is a great primer for anyone interested in reading the history of Modern Egypt.

Had to take this for a class at University of Illinois. Quick read, with tons of information that allowed for understanding and background of Egypt.
