5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and amazingly rich read on ancient Egypt
I have read countless books about the ancient world and civilizations including Egypt, Rome, Greece, Assyrian, Sumerian, Babylonian, phoenician, scandavian, Asian Indian and little chinese, so I have an idea on chosing good books on this subject. And I tell you this book is one of the most informative book and it is so complete that any reading in the subject will make it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't What I Excepted
I thought the book would have more about individuals but it's a very board book, so it's good for general information but not detailed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and amazingly rich read on ancient Egypt, May 23, 2001
This review is from: Egypt: The World of the Pharaohs (Hardcover)
I have read countless books about the ancient world and civilizations including Egypt, Rome, Greece, Assyrian, Sumerian, Babylonian, phoenician, scandavian, Asian Indian and little chinese, so I have an idea on chosing good books on this subject. And I tell you this book is one of the most informative book and it is so complete that any reading in the subject will make it just a repitition! It contains a geart text, numerus clear pictures and drawings with awesome illustrations which allow you to imagine what was it to live in their time. It covers all the aspects, starting from the very begining prehistory, ealy, middle, late, Greco-Roman periods. Also covers almost all aspects of their life, Gods, cults, state society, houses, cities, Arts, lifestyle, Palaces, daily life Royal administration and its organization, military, political, mumification, burial and much much more. It contains a very valuable appendecies (Gods of ancient Egypt, list of historic sites, rulers of Egypt, Egypt collections, and chronological synopsis). I visited Egypt three times and I saw pictures in the book that I have never seen. What I like most is there are some drawings that reconstruct temples, palaces and monuments which provides a clearer image of site rather than just pictures of ruins. I enphusise again on the pictures included in addition to the easy to read text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly and accessible, April 19, 2009
I came across this by accident while preparing to teach an upper-level undergraduate class on Ancient Near East and Egyptian Art. This is an all-too-rare example of a serious, responsible scholarly book on this subject, that is also accessible to the educated general reader with an interest. It is up-to-date, incorporating recent discoveries and interpretations without pushing any one theory. It is well-written, well-edited, and beautifully illustrated with both the usual suspects and many less familiar objects and monuments. It is, for my purposes, much better than any of the standard art history texts on the subject, many of which are out of date or illustrated mainly in black-and-white. I particularly liked the fact that it is a collection of short, free-standing articles by various specialists that cover the chronological sequence of Egyptian Art from prehistory to the Roman conquest, as well as special topics such as temple design, funerary sculpture, and the development of writing. This makes it both fun and easy to dip in and out of, since the individual articles are very digestible. But they are well-coordinated into a coherent sequence. The history, culture and religion of Egypt are well-covered, and the art is explained in context. It has a glossary and a useful timeline at the end. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great study guide for Egypt tour, September 1, 2009

This is a well-written text, yes text, that is an excellent study-guide for the Egyptophile who is planning a trip to Egypt, has taken one and wants to learn more, or is a student ready to be deluged with rich information and terrific illustrations. As a former archaeologist, I found this book to be just the right amount of technical, cultural, and archaeological information while still being readable and captivating. It added greatly to the depth of my appreciation for the wonders of Ancient Egypt that I experienced during a recent visit there. The only negative was the fact it is too heavy to haul around on an international flight.
