Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-Although Haynes does cover the reigns of well-known pharaohs such as Chufu (the builder of the pyramids at Giza), King Tut, Ramesses II, and Cleopatra, she also tries to provide an overview of ancient Egypt, touching on everyday life, art, and religion. The problem is, the presentation is dry and uninspired. The text lacks sparkle, and much of the information is available in many other sources. The full-color illustrations are standard stock photos. George Hart's Ancient Egypt (Knopf, 1990) provides a much richer range of information in both text and illustration. Russmann's book also suffers from a lackluster presentation, but it may prove more useful to libraries simply because there is much less material available on Nubia than on Egypt. Recent excavations have revealed a culture much influenced by nearby Egypt, but also unique in its own art, pyramids, and writing. Robert S. Bianchi's The Nubians (Millbrook, 1994) covers much of the same information on the Nubian dynasties but focuses a bit more on Nubian kings of Egypt. Pamela F. Service's The Ancient African Kingdom of Kush (Benchmark, 1997) focuses on the Kush Kingdom, the Nubian culture that wrote in a language called Meroitic, which still has not been translated. A Kid's Review
This review is from: Egyptian Dynasties (African Civilizations) (Library Binding)
I LOVE THIS BOOK! It told me so many interesting facts, people, and other things about Egypt. It explained to me how their drawings and writings were made, and how they were formed, and I studied it real carefully: If every book was like this, People would be a million times smarter than real life! If I had to choose my favorite Geography book, THIS WOULD BE THE NUMBER ONE CHOICE!
