YA-- This series looks at ancient civilizations through archaeological developments and changes in technique. This focus makes them somewhat different from the equally useful "Atlas" series (Facts on File) which concentrates more on geographical considerations in the growth of ancient civilizations. The formats are standard in that they cover the civilizations chronologically, but unusual in that they include "Visual Stories" which provide greater depth on a few particular locales or considerations of everyday life in a period. The comprehensive indexes and glossaries will aid students immeasurably, as will the photographs and maps. The Egyptian Kingdoms covers the 4000 - year history of ancient Egypt through its discovery by Napoleonic explorers and up to current innovations. The Greek World covers archaeological research on the Classical and Hellenistic periods beginning in the second Century a.d. through the Renaissance and on to current methods; it discusses how changes in methodology have affected our perception and knowledge of Greek civilization.
