Grade 5 Up-Storyteller Jim Weiss brings a master's touch to this collection of myths and stories based on historical facts. Prefaced by background information about ancient and contemporary Egypt, the first story is a creation myth about brother gods, virtuous Osiris and cruel, deceitful Set. The succeeding tales describe the roles of Ra-Amun, Isis, and other gods and goddesses of the Egyptian pantheon. The final two stories deal with the pyramid builders and the grave robbers who ravaged their cherished treasures, and an engrossing story of the 1881 discovery of the astonishingly rich tomb of Rameses the Great. While all the tales are well-crafted, the last two prove that fact can be as dramatic as any fiction. The stories are carefully arranged so that they build one upon the other until the final tale helps listeners understand how monumental the discovery of the tomb was not only to those who entered it after 3,200 years but also to the people of modern Egypt. Weiss's telling is captivating, with subtle voice variations. His use of language envelopes listeners in a mysterious world of myth, but with a tone that suggests respect for the culture which has nurtured these tales and created a rich history. This item would appear by the description to include the title "Galileo and the Stargazers". However, when I ordered this item with that implied, I did not recieve any Galileo and the Stargazers but only "Egyptian Treasures: Mummies and Myths". I mention this because I think this is false advertizing to indicate that this includes both stories when in actuality, it does not.

Jim Weiss is an awesome story teller. This CD starts with a brief intro to why people settled in Egypt, and then goes through several stories that tell a chronological story about the Gods of Egypt. So it's really like one big story. It's engaging, and we love to listen in the car.

We love everything we have by Jim Weiss. This makes great listening for long car rides too. My children all beg for "more Jim Weiss"! They really love the Galileo and the Stargazers. The stories are fascinating and true and he is a gifted storyteller. Worth every penny and then some!
