HAVE TO AGREE,
By Carl Mack (Palm Springs, CA United States) - See all my reviews

If you are going to use another artist as a heavy influence, at least make sure it is a good one and that you do it well. Well Wallinger picks the Stones, The Beatles, Dylan (and they are all good artists) and he manages to make his sound unique and come up with a carload of brilliant tunes (therefore he is very good at what he does). Check out the sheer infectious Sgt Pepper sounding "Call Me Up". I dare you not to like it. Elsewhere this release has winner after winner. All cuts are pretty good, but in particular the beautiful "Vanity Fair", the classic rock sounding "Hercules", the elegant "She's The One" and the grand, bombastic "Curse of The Mummy's Tomb". All of World Partys c.d.'s are great, and this one will not disappoint you.

I've owned Bang by World Party and looked no further because, although it contains some beautiful songs , it's too much of a mixed bag for me. Some great songs, some missed opportunities and so on. However, when I found this one I was tempted to buy it, if only because it contained the original She's the one, (lately a hit by Robbie Williams, I believe). To get to that song, one has to get through four others and it isjust unbelieveable how good they are. Things don't stop there however. Rolling of a log and Piece of mind spring to mind as other favorites. Great music, well executed with feeling and sincerity. Beatlesy it may be, but there are worse inspirations!

This is an excellent world party cd. if you like the beatles and similiar groups you will love this cd. I don't have the import version, but i cannot say enough good things about this cd, if you are a world party fan, your collection is very incomplete without it!

Quite possibly World Party's best album.,
This review is from: Egyptology (Audio CD)
Goodbye Jumbo is often referred to as Wallinger's finest hour, but Egyptology is well worth your time and attention. The song-writing is superb, the Beatle references abundant, and there's even a foreboding, Dylanesque track that takes you deep into a mummy's tomb for a lesson you may not be ready for...
And if that's not enough, there's more. While I will concede that 'She's the One' is among the most beautiful love songs ever written,'Hercules' is the show stopper on this album. Like many things that catch us off guard, this song arrives in medias res, projecting the wearied voice of one who has lived through hardship, the voice of one who has come back to tell the tale. It is a brutally stark song, one that lifts you up and out of your stupor, sharing a powerful yet simple message of self-preservation that may seem obvious but bears repeating nonetheless.

A Real Gem,

Listened to this wonderful album this morning and, as always, I'm reminded how wildly talented Karl and crew are. I saw them over a decade back when they were through town promoting Egyptology and it was wicked. One review said the band sounds like what the Beatles would sound like if Prince and Dylan were members, and I've used similar analogies myself. The problem with such comparisons, though, is it makes it would like World Party is a retro wannabe band, which they aren't by any stretch.

Quirky, but works,
This review is from: Egyptology (Audio CD)
Of all the World Party albums this one has probably emerged as my favourite: A good mix of songs knit together mostly by very strong melodies and intelligent lyrics. After the intensity and rage of Bang! I don't know where else Karl Wallinger could have gone but to this more relaxed and more personal place. Just listened to it again tonight and these 15 jewels sound as fresh as ever.

Karl Wallinger's GREATEST WORK BY FAR! I can't for the life of me think how this slipped past the mainstream other than the fact that it truly proves supreme ignorance by today's mainstream listeners and the fact that record companies just don't promote greatness....rather, they promote garbage....AND GARBAGE SELLS! If you like the Stones, Dead, Dylan, Beatles, real music....you'll love this album! Never eveer want to remove it from your playlist!

A steal at this price.,

One wonders what might have been had this record not fallen foul of it's label's misfortunes and missed an audience by a mile. Perhaps the most well known song here is the Robbie William's hit, She's The One. It is only one and by no means the best, of a great bunch of Karl Wallinger's harmony and hook laden tunes. The recently issued "enhanced" version, available elsewhere, only adds a couple of videos. For sheer aural pleasure, this one is tremendous value.

misstep,

I got this cd used for 2.99 and I am glad I got it for that price. Since this is out of stock at most places, don't waste your money on the import, it is not worth it. Wallinger was taking his musical ride without a rudder on this one-there just is no focus. Any of his other discs, in this order, goodbye jumbo, private revolution, bang, and dumbing up would be better than this...nothing really stands out..........This was only a misstep in 97 that has been overcome.
