5.0 out of 5 stars Underappreciated!
Why has everyone overlooked "Ehrgeiz"? OK, aside from the fact that its name doesn't include the word "Tekken". Sheesh.

I *hated* fighting games before Ehrgeiz. Too much immature button-mashing, favoring speed over any kind of strategy, improvisation, or skill. In Ehrgeiz, there's great depth in understanding and maximizing your character --...

3.0 out of 5 stars FFVII carried an average game over the top
I owned (past tense because i lost it) this game when it first came out because i was able to control FFVII characters in a different atmosphere. Now with the release of Crisis Core i purchased the game again to re-live that feeling. And once again i had a lot of fun fighting Sepheroth vs Zack, and other various combinations. But i realized that if FF characters were...

I *hated* fighting games before Ehrgeiz. Too much immature button-mashing, favoring speed over any kind of strategy, improvisation, or skill. In Ehrgeiz, there's great depth in understanding and maximizing your character -- each has strengths and weaknesses, and the fun is from using your money moves while knowing how to stop your opponent's.

A knock against the game is a widespread allegation of unbalanced, overpowered attacks. Pish. Most attacks can be blocked; all can be dodged, countered, and/or interrupted.

Yeah, the bonus games are fun, but the action at the heart of the fighting mode is solid. Don't let this one get away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gloriously amazing, August 4, 2000

I'm a huge fan of the twitch fighting game, it's why I bought a console, as PC based twich games don't cut it.

Well, I've pretty much whomped on every PSX fighter until Ehrgeiz. This is the most challenging fighting game ever, period. With dozens, perhaps hundreds of moves (I haven't discovered them all yet) per fighter, you're bound to play this puppy again and again.

Unlike other games wherein a super attack (fireballs, ice, etc) can pretty much end the game, EhrGeiz allows for blocking. And unlike any other fighter I've seen, you MUST learn to block. If you don't, you will die quickly. You can see who knows the game and who doesn't by how well someone blocks. An excellent twist is "Interrupted" attacks. If you go full bore at an enemy, and he blocks, he can also trap you , thus "interrupting" you. What's that mean ? It means he will pound the tar out of you as he retailiates.

As a final word, it's nice to see balanced female characters that aren't stupid like Chun Li was in street fighter. The female characters are just as hardcore as the male, with excellent attack patterns.

Buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best fighting Game EVER!, December 27, 1999

Ive had this game for about 4-5 months and have played it for 200+ hours. I have accumulated a LARGE following for this game that started with just a friend and I. Each weekend involves 10+ hours of Ehrgeiz.

This FAR surpasses any other fighting game. It is 3D, has HUGE amounts of strategy, takes only a few minutes to learn, but even after 200 hours we are still finding new moves.

My best friend's lil brother is a gaming master...at 13 years old has mastered any game he has gotten his hands on. He has counted the amount of moves that each player has... and they have around 100 moves! WOW! surpass that Tekken ;) He also finds us 2-5 new moves each weekend, adding more to his lists every time.

If any of you need help with ANYTHING in the game, just email me at squall@wcn.net

4.0 out of 5 stars Questing and Battle!, November 30, 1999

First off, there's plenty of characters to work with, including some guest stars from the Final Fantasy series (You have to earn some of them in arcade mode) Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, Yuffie, and Vincent show up, along with Zack, another Soldier, first class. Perhaps my favorite thing about this game is the Quest mode, where you can take Clair and Koji through dungeons, gathering weapons, armor, and magick as you go on different missions. Drawbacks, you ask? Well, the biggest drawback for the quest mode is that saving data costs more every time you level up. That starts to hurt after a while. As for the fighting part...there really isn't much of a drawback! Great game!

4.0 out of 5 stars Play With Your Buddies!, February 15, 2004
This review is from: Ehrgeiz (Video Game)
Play with your buddies, beat on your little brother or sister in this great fighter game. Some how, I feel as if this game was tucked under the covers of the video game world, and has not been exposed enough to others.
This isn't just corner your opponent and hack until they are defeated. There is some skill actually involved.
There's quite a few features to this game, but some of them I left hardly touched. The RPG game included in this, to me was gross in design and not very fun. I wasn't captivated by it at all.
However, this game is not about the RPG feature, it's all about the action between two opponents, and unlocking great characters such as Vincent and Yuffie from FFVII. You can also unlock other neat characters and new outfits for everyone.
A great game for it's time, sadly overlooked by many. To me, though, it got boring after a while, but it still is great. Not as addicting as some of the newer fighter games. However, some may find discovering many moves and using them quite intriguing. The controls are quite good on this game. Some of the arenas to fight in seemed small.

Be warey of the prices it is going for. I found this game several times between $10.00 - $15.00. However, if you're a collector, money isn't always a factor. Besides it all, it's kind of a hard game to find.

If you like this game, or are considering it, other games that may interest you are:
Soul Blade - PSX
Soul Calibur II - PS2, Gamecube, XBOX
Bloody Roar

A great game for the occasional gamer, this game combines a very interesting fighting game with a full-feature RPG. Plus, you can play teh game as Cloud, Tifa, Vincent and Yuffie (all from FF7)! This is a very fun game!

I rented this game and it is so cool.it has a whole lota characters from other videogames.I rented this game only because i saw cloud from ff7 on it ^-^ It has a rpg and mini games and fighting modes. The fighting thing is so good.i used the battle stages to cheat.since i could move in the back and foreground, i used to run around the opponent then kick them and run! but the rpg is boring. it gets nowhere fast. but over all it is still a good game

I rented this game because it has Final Fantasy people in it. And it's fun to battle them but there's not much more to this game. The graphics are standard, the sound could use some improving, the control is pretty bad and the overall game is mildly amusing.

Graphics: 4.0
Sound: 3.5
Control: 3.0
Fun Factor: 3.5

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just a fighting game (It also includes a dungeon crawl mode), October 6, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ehrgeiz (Video Game)
Most of these reviews mention the fighting style game with the arcade mode and the characters involved in that mode. This game actually also includes a dungeon crawl style game. If you are familiar with the game Rogue or the Diablo franchise, you would feel at home with this game. You have one town with shop keepers from which you travel deeper and deeper into a randomly generating dungeon. The dungeon crawl aspect of the game appeals to me far more than the fighting game aspect of it. But you don't get Final Fantasy 7 characters for the dungeon crawl, so most people probably wouldn't like it. Overall the dungeon crawl is pretty interesting for those who like that style of game.

5.0 out of 5 stars God Bless This Review, February 4, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ehrgeiz (Video Game)
Absolutely amazing, it has this feeling that you wont get from modern fighting console game. That maybe more developers should look at this and bring back some old mechanics. Probably the best part of this game is all the great unlock ables you can obtain, such as characters and costumes, of course the best character unlockables would have to be the FF7 characters Square Soft added. On top of that you get a decent RPG that is very fun and rewarding. Last but not least you get these several mini-games that you can play co-op, on top of the co-op fighting arcade mode. So there you have it you get a full fighting game with more on top of that... Great huh..
