All right, I have one gripe which I would still have had when this game was new: the voice acting is mediocre. That's the only significant bad mark I can give.
The gameplay is definitely story-based, but there are multiple paths through the game and multiple endings. If you're expecting an ID-esque shooter, I suspect you'll be disappointed; if you play this game right, you'll avoid shooting and killing nearly as much as the average person does in real life. Characters develop throughout the game, the settings change from time to time, and I doubt that anyone will ever figure everything out the first time around. You have to decide a lot of things in this game, including what skills and "biomods" (things like cybernetic strength enhancement) to build up with the limited amount of upgrade points afforded you throughout the game. If you're an avid gamer, play it on the hardest level for a serious challenge. Deus Ex may only have Unreal-era graphics, sound and music, but if it were made over again with all the newest bells and whistles today, its strengths would still be the intriguing(and somewhat prophetic)story it tells and the extensive playability it offers.

One of the greatest RPGs of the last 10 years,

I remember when Deus Ex first came out, that I didn't really give it a second though. When PC Gamer reviewed it and found it to be one of the most immersive and innovative titles they had ever seen, I was excited. I had to play it. I don't regret a minute of my time playing it.
It borrows heavily from Warren Specter's previous work, especially System Shock 2 and a little bit of Thief. (Both amazing games) It had surprisingly good dialouge, a story worthy of a great movie, and gameplay that was as deep as it was fun. The unfortunately mediocre sequel left the series in somewhat poor shape by dumbing it down for a console friendly crowd, but the original stands on it's own as one of the finest (perhaps best) FPS/RPG games ever made. If you have not played it to finality yet, I envy you. It has dated rather well in terms of gameplay and role-playing, but the graphics have not held up that well after 10 years. World textures were always very low resolution, and character models have always been somewhat odd. But don't let anything hold you back... Get this game, and beat it now!

This game is awesome. I would suggest purchasing it through Steam for ten bucks though, instead of paying 50

DEUS MANIFESTARE!,

This review is from: Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition (CD-ROM)
During this ongoing Dark Age for PC gaming, when corporate Greed has coupled with pseudo-DRM schemes to stifle any original idea or creative process, I found myself, again and again, reaching for the classics. And DEUS EX is definitely a classic masterpiece.
Set in the near future, infused with equal doses of cyberpunk mentality and noir atmosphere, playing like an FPS with strong RPG elements (inventory, character development, modifiable equipment, secondary quests) - and yet one is better off avoiding shooting more often than not!. Whoever played DEUS EX can attest that this game will stay with you. Forever. And rightly so. This is a game infused with life. The characters act natural. The script is brilliantly paranoid. And the whole setting will immerse you into this twisted world of technological possibilities and power. In a perfect world, David Lynch would have realized William Gibson's Neuromancer. Short of that, we have been offered DEUS EX. Sure the graphics may look dated. But I promise you that you will find no lip-synced modern game more appealing than DEUS EX. Even 5+ years old PCs will be able to render its full potential (although the game's strengths are hardly limited to its appearance) - and it is DRM-free. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

All the hype,

I finally understand what all the hype around this game is. I had never heard of "Deus Ex" until recently. I read about it, saw the raving reviews with few dissenting opinions. Ok, for such short money, I gave it a try. I'm glad I did. It's a good 1st person shooter game but goes well beyond that. It's not a matter of getting a big gun, running full ahead, and firing away. There's good story development, lots of secrets, and the game is very well paced.

Best Game I ever got,
I received this game free when I bought my first computer and I have bought 2 time more since because I wear out the disks. This game has so many interesting elements and twists that I worth replay over and over. With the news of the production of the third game in the series I highly recommend that you buy this game to just get in to the series or just to refresh you memory before the new game is released

The Quintessential Cyberpunk RPG,
By Will Oprisko (Indianapolis, IN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition (CD-ROM)
Deus Ex is an innovative First Person RPG that immerses you in a dynamic world that adapts and changes based upon how you play the game. The overall game structure is episodic and each chapter unveils an open environment that provides an unlimited number of choices or methods for completing your objectives. Similar to modern RPGs, NPCs have a life of their own by engaging in dialogue with one another and adjusting their scripted behavior to match your actions or dialogue choices. What you say and do will determine which aspects of the storyline develop or what areas of the map you can access. Even seemingly innocuous decisions can result in major narrative changes later on, and the game designers have anticipated every possible choice or action you could imagine; try and see for yourself. There are enough variety in story telling and multiple endings to keep you coming back to play again and again. The skill and augmentation system allows for each player to customize their character without defaulting to traditional archetypes (though these are also possible to construct). Although you cannot change your skills or augmentations once they are assigned, the game is fluid enough to allow you to modify your play-style and successfully finish it. Aesthetically, the game is littered with information you can find by reading a book, picking up a newspaper, or hacking an email account. These fictional inclusions are mixed together with references from actual literature/philosophy that results in creating an unprecedented sense of reality. While reading everything is unnecessary to completing the game, it significantly enriches the experience and finding all the chapters to "Jacob's Shadow" is rewarding in itself. The award winning soundtrack reflects the cyberpunk/conspiracy theory atmosphere without ever becoming repetitive or awkward. Even though this game was released in 2000, the political and social commentary is provoking and uncomfortably relevant over a decade later. This is game is not a mindless romp in a sandbox, but an intellectually stimulating experience that rewards you with something new to discover each time you play it. If you enjoy a game that allows full customization, rewards innovation, tells a compelling story, and provides an unforgettable experience, then this is the game for you.

I ordered Deus Ex GOTY for XP from Ship Zip and encountered many problems installing the game. Long story short, Ship Zip responded promptly to my complaints and replaced the returned disk. After some trial and error and the help of a gamer pal of mine, installation problems were solved on a second computer at work (we installed from the setup file in the system folder rather than the autoplay or automatic install from disk) In addition I realized I did not have Winzip on my home computer; once this was downloaded from the internet I was able to install and play the game at home as I originally wanted. I haven't played Deus Ex enough to comment on the game itself at this point but I wish to commend Ship Zip for their efforts to rectify the situation, when the problem was really at my end. Good job.

Received the game in the mail as advertised. The game itself is fun to play and very very good value for the price. Also, the game is laptop friendly.
