3.0 out of 5 stars Was this supposed to be comedy?
First I was imagining Adam Sandler. Then, realizing they really were serious, I was thinking Hillary Clinton's youtube campaign ad ("Hillary! For you and me! Good for our democracy!". Oy.). Then I got to Donny Osmond in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who says you have to be Jewish to write a Hanukkah song?, December 25, 2009
This review is from: Eight Days of Hanukkah (MP3 Download)
I did a double-take when I saw that Sen. Hatch wrote this song. I downloaded it, and the song exceeds all of my expectations. This song is better than many of the Hanukkah songs I've listened to. Four stars for the song, and the extra star because it's free.

I personally think it's very nice that a Mormon (or any Christian) wrote a Hanukkah song. All the Christmas songs written and performed by Jews over the years, it's nice to see one the other way around for a change. I am not a Republican, and I'm not a Democrat. I am just happy to have another good song for my Hanukkah iTunes playlist. Thank you to Amazon and Sen. Hatch, my family will enjoy this song for years to come.

This song is great!! It is catchy (I'm humming it right now), performed well, and a lot of fun. This is a song that both my son and my parents like! Go, Orrin!!

5.0 out of 5 stars nobody brings Chanukah joy like Orrin Hatch!, April 23, 2011

I'm not Jewish, but after listening to the joyful and emotionally intense celebration march of Chanukah, written by another non-Jewish and very Mormon senator Orrin Hatch, I felt inspired - in an explosive freedom loving manner - and had the intense urge to go out and purchase a menora and a dreidel. Also, a big fat round of applause - mazel tov - to Amazon MP3 for making this musical gem truly accessible to everyone with its aptly set price of 0 dollars and 0 cents. After listening to this magnum opus of holiday music, I asked myself the question "How much would I pay for this treasure?". Priceless. I came to the same conclusion.

Listen to this song without any preconceived biases and you will have to admit that it is appropriate, interesting, and catchy. I was very impressed and have played it a number of times, liking it more each time.

This is a great song - catchy and uplifting. Thank you for writing one of the best contemporary hanukkah songs out there, Mr. Hatch!

Wow - I'm stunned by the power and clarity of the message. Orrin may now be leading the way for more politicians to step up to the microphones with music lyrics in hand. Well done Orrin! Now I'm ready for Kwanzaa Karols with lyrics by Al Sharpton. Who knows what wonders will now spring forth for the welcoming masses from our troubadours of the congressional halls!!!

Some listeners will be laughing. Some will no doubt be congratulating themselves on having a multicultural xmas album. The solution is left as an exercise for the reader.

I suggest this Tom Lehrer ditty as accompaniment - George Murphy

1.0 out of 5 stars Still, Really?, March 7, 2011
This review is from: Eight Days of Hanukkah (MP3 Download)
I loathe him, I think he is awful and a sign of the times ahead where ignorance ruins us all. I would never, nor would my children, listen to something produced by slime even if my children felt waves of Joy for 24 hours afterward, some things are fairly easy to stick up for, at least I think so. The cost far outweighs the free music. Really? This isn't where anyone draws a line and says I won't indulge at least this. Gross. Just gross.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, January 4, 2010

I don't think this would challenge any traditional favorites but it's interesting at least. You would almost expect something like this to be a candidate for the soundtrack of the film "For Your Consideration".

I do have reservations though. Usually the songwriter is not also credited as the artist, much less having his face being the album artwork with his name prominently displayed. The singer and the musicians are given credit on the cover, but in small print almost as an afterthought. Such would suggest that this is a variant of a time-tested publicity strategy. Politicians typically put a book out on the market when they plan to run for President the next time around. If Hatch stays out of the 2012 Presidential race I'll assume his interest in Hanukkah was genuine. I'd hate to think that he would stoop to exploiting someone else's religious holiday for visibility among a targeted group of constituents. If that does turn out to be the case, the fellow should either croak out the vocals himself (remember "Gallant Men"?) or get professional handlers who are more capable of finessing the packaging and marketing. A political manipulation would be less obvious if the press releases said something like, "The Klezmatics are including an Orrin Hatch song on their next Hanukkah CD - backed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!"
