Book Description

August 1, 2006
THE MAN who held in his hand the document of which this strange assemblage of letters formed the concluding paragraph remained for some moments lost in thought. It contained about a hundred of these lines, with the letters at even distances, and undivided into words. It seemed to have been written many years before, and time had already laid his tawny finger on the sheet of good stout paper which was covered with the hierogly-phics. On what principle had these letters been arranged? He who held the paper was alone able to tell. With such cipher language it is as with the locks of some of our iron safes - in either case the protection is the same. The combinations which they lead to can be counted by millions, and no calculator's life would suffice to express them. Some particular "word" has to be known before the lock of the safe will act, and some "cipher" is necessary before that cryptogram can be read.

5.0 out of 5 stars EIGHT HUNDRED LEAGUES ON THE AMAZON, October 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Not what you would expect from Jules Verne. Modern readers would possibly prefer it being about half as long since he spent a great deal of time on the flora and fauna and the villages of the area. Having spent some time in the Amazon, I found this a plus. A story about an honorable man sentenced to death for a crime his didn't commit. An encrypted message which could save his life. Dedicated and loving family and friends in a giant raft going down the Amazon river. A dastardly villian, everything is black and white, no gray areas. A cliffhanger ending which keeps you from putting it down. I have read a lot of Verne's books but had never heard of this until I found it on Kindle. It goes down as my favorite Verne novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing work which only Verne can deliver., March 31, 2011
Its an amazing work of Jules Verne. What a description of the flora and fauna of the Amazon. It kindles me to go around hoping the there would not be drastic changes in the hundred and twenty years! I did not realize from the first page that the cryptogram would be so deep in this novel. As usual Verne gave importance to the self esteem and honor of life. A must read for anybody. The first 100 pages may look hard for reading and may look like the description of National Geographic type, but soon when you get into his grips you cannot put it down for a moment.
