5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
Landrum has figured out 8 key behavioral traits critical to success that the truly great possess -- and says they can be learned. His descriptions of great people according to these traits, such as charisma, self-confidence, drive and intuition are fascinating and illuminating. He doesn't hold back on what the downside of some of these traits are, and some of those...

Landrum has figured out 8 key behavioral traits critical to success that the truly great possess -- and says they can be learned. His descriptions of great people according to these traits, such as charisma, self-confidence, drive and intuition are fascinating and illuminating. He doesn't hold back on what the downside of some of these traits are, and some of those descriptions were sobering. A taxonomy of "greatness," it's a wonderful read. It's worth reading just to know that when he considered starting Disneyland, Disney had to go against the recommendations of his Board of Directors and experts such as the Stanford Research Institute. All the reasons they gave why the park would fail, turned out to be the reasons why it succeeded. Uh oh!

As with his other books, Dr. Landrum doesn't kid around here. He isn't out to psych you up or pump you full of platitudes. He lays it all out, the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to greatness. Then, he not only shows you what it takes to be great, but how to do it. If you're tired of the feel-good fluff out there, give this book a try. While it motivated the hell out of me, some of his stories scared the hell out of me as well. But then, that's the way it is out on the battlefield.

5.0 out of 5 stars A one night wonder read., May 22, 1999
This review is from: Eight Keys to Greatness: How to Unlock Your Hidden Potential (Hardcover)
Gene does it again! Not only have his past books kept me alive and kicking, they gave me the actual stories behind the people - to keep me from going insane as I pursued my own dream. Only this time, in a very elegant manner, he has distilled from the stories what actually works.

2.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Judge a Book By Its Title, April 16, 2011

This review is from: Eight Keys to Greatness: How to Unlock Your Hidden Potential (Hardcover)
I am not sure if there could have been a greater misnomer in the title of this book. Right in the title is: "How to Unlock Your Hidden Potential". There is not a single how to in this book. I had to give it two stars because of what the book actually IS.

It is a very high level introduction into the biographical lives of some people that have achieved great things in their lives. If marketed as a light history/multi biography book, perhaps it could review better.

There is a high level of redundancy where many passages and stories were repeated almost verbatim throughout the various chapters. If I heard one more time how Amelia Earhart had short hair and wore trousers as opposed to dresses I would have felt compelled to pull my own hair out or hang myself with my trousers!

As a fluff biographical book of 150 pages this could have had value. As what the title portends I must say it falls way short. I allow for the possibility that this review could also be harsh due to the high expectations I had of it.

Suffice to say I finished the book, as I try to do to each book I read, but it was arduous.

1.0 out of 5 stars Platitudes and Memes, December 21, 2010

This book just repeated a bunch of platitudes and Memes that you hear everyday. Divided the world into two groups: "Great People" and "Losers."
