Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- Four beautifully photographed introductions to the lives of common insects and spiders. Each opens with a brief general description of its subject, then focuses on the special characteristics, diet, and life cycles of about a half-dozen representative species. Eight Legs includes the jumping, crab, wolf, orb weaver, and black widow spiders. Insects in the Garden discusses grasshoppers, mantises, dragonflies, and wasps; Insects around the House examines termites, houseflies, cockroaches, and two types of moths. What Bit Me? looks at mosquitoes, bed bugs, fleas, and three kinds of lice. Sharp full-color photographs appear on almost every page, many of which are dramatic close-ups. The texts are clearly written and well organized; however, each is flawed, to some degree, by the omission of some important information. Mating is explained only in the vaguest terms and although the process of metamorphosis is described in the insect books, only one employs the term and defines it. Similar information on most of these animals can be found in numerous other sources. The same spider species are presented in Penny's Discovering Spiders (Bookwright, 1986). In the case of the insects, there are many books that cover individual species, such as Johnson's Mantises (Lerner, 1984) and Porter's Discovering Crickets and Grasshoppers (Bookwright, 1987). Despite their shortcomings, these titles will be attractive additions to heavily used nature sections. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
