nice surprise, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Eight Pillars of Greek Wisdom: What You Can Learn from Classical Myth and History (Hardcover)
I picked this book up off the el-cheapo rack at Barnes and Noble and liked it so much I decided to assign it in a humanities class I teach at a local college. It provides a wonderful snapshot of the meaning behind so many famous myths and moments from Greek history that everyone should remember but few people actually do; thus it's a great refresher and the personal insights provided by Bartman are genuine. It is highly worth the short time it takes to read it.

Interesting read with a compelling point, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Eight Pillars of Greek Wisdom: What You Can Learn from Classical Myth and History (Hardcover)
It is a shame this book wasn't picked up more broadly. It is clear Bertman has distilled Greek philosophy down to a manageable set of principles, illustrated them with engaging stories which carry the message, and related them to us today without sounding too preachy.
While, like many books of this genre, it is long on what and short on how, the fact it has substance, causes you to think, is rooted in proven principles, and is not repetitive makes it a worthwhile read.
Perhaps if it was structured a bit differently more people would be enjoying the wisdom contained. This is truly a diamond in the rough and worth getting new or used where possible.
