Book Description

February 15, 1997 0719045258 978-0719045257
The 18th century is seen as a "golden age" for furniture design and craftsmanship. This book investigates the various developments in furniture during this period, tracing the changing factors in design, materials, manufacturing, business organization, retailing and consumption. The aim of the book is to bring a multi-disciplinary approach to furniture history, to build on the existing studies of the subject by providing an overview of the elements of this aspect of material culture, and to offer an analysis of the whole process of furniture supply during the 18th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complex but invaluable study of l8thC furniture manufactur, July 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Eighteenth-Century Furniture (Studies in Design and Material Culture) (Paperback)
Although I wouldn't recommend this book to a novice furniture historian, nor to a novice collector, for the more experienced student of l8thC furniture history this book is an invaluable source of information seldom, if ever, published in one volume before. The format of the book allows research by subject alone (e.g. material and techniques) if, like me, you find the text rather too dry and heavy going to be a steady read. I would suggest that no serious library of furniture history will be complete without this volume.
