From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Action, conspiracy, love, and war are just a few of the fascinating elements in McCardle's debut. Amanda Obermann's mother is bipolar, her dad's death is a mystery, and she's a junior at Peel Academy, most of whose graduates go on to work for the FBI or CIA. Amanda, along with her classmates, is a genius. She's already looking forward to working for the CIA with her long-term boyfriend, Abe, when they graduate next year, until her name is called at the graduate ceremony…as a junior! Instantly Amanda's world comes crashing down. She is taken against her will to a top-secret government agency and is forced to take tests to be part of Annum Guard. Failure in Annum Guard results in life in prison. She's stuck. She has to say goodbye to everything: her name (she's now Iris), her family, Abe. The more she learns about Annum Guard, the further she wants to run. Narrator Amy McFadden flawlessly articulates the action throughout the story, giving life to all the characters. Listeners will eagerly be awaiting a sequel. Slight cursing will make this title appropriate for slightly older tweens, while some ethical themes make it ideal for discussion groups. Give this title to fans of time travel and historical fiction. A first-rate listen.—Amanda Schiavulli, Finger Lakes Library System, NY

I got this book in the mail and decided to set it aside to read on Mother's Day. Later in the day I opened it to read a couple of pages and ended up reading the entire book in (almost) one sitting. I loved the characters and the history in the book. Being from New England I could really picture all of the scenes and the author did a phenomenal job describing everything so I felt like I was able to go right back in time with the characters. I can't wait to read the next one!

Once I got started reading, I could not put this book down! The story of Iris is fueled by her entrance into the Annum Guard, her longing for her boyfriend Abe, and her driving desire to find out what really happened to her father. There were so many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages instead of putting the book down. You will not regret your purchase of this book. I've been recommending this book to anyone who will listen. I can't wait for the next one!

Wow, what a thrilling intense adventure through time, that takes us through corruption, conspiracies, betrayals, lies, deception and murder!!! THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN is full of soo much awesomeness, all packed in one little book!!!

I don't even know where to begin with all of this book's awesomeness! The world building was so complex and full of layers of plot and character development that made this book what it was, a bombshell of a debut!!

The characters were interesting... They're was a few I didn't really care for at first, but then as the book progressed, they kinda grew on me. But I was and still am a little iffy of the love interest, Abe. He's supposed to love Iris (Amanda) with all his heart, and have her back until the very end, no matter what. Yet he didn't, not at first any way. I can't say to much on that without giving spoilers away, but there was a very big important part in this book where his loyalties and trust in the girl he loves is tested, and in my opinion, he failed, big time!!! Granted, something was hanging over his head, but he didn't believe in Iris at first, and was willing to separate himself before even knowing the truth behind it all. And with that part my whole faith in him--in them as a couple, went right out the window. As far as I know he is the main love interest in book two, BLACKOUT, but he better do some serious making up to Iris before he gets my love, again!!!

But as far as the other characters go, they were great! The main character Iris was awesome!! Yes, she did kinda drive me crazy in the beginning, and even manged to get a couple eye rolls out of me from time to time.

Amanda is a student at Peel Academy, expecting to go into the CIA with her boyfriend Abe when they graduate next year. But when she is pulled after Testing Day a year early, Amanda is whisked away to become the eighth member of the Annum Guard, a secret time-traveling agency. She is allowed no further contact with anyone, including Abe, and is even given a new name--Iris. Even worse, she discovers her place in the Annum Guard is far from secure. If she fails, she'll be incarcerated in solitary confinement for the rest of her life.

This was a fun, entertaining read full of intrigue and twists. The historical parts as Iris travels back in time are interesting and well-written. The novel is fast-paced, and the characters we meet are compelling and fully realized. My only real issue was the romance. It didn't feel fully fleshed out to me, probably because Amanda is whisked away from Abe by the second chapter. I would have liked some flashbacks to their relationship so that when [something spoilery happens] it has more of an impact.

4 stars.

This book is nothing short of brilliant. Seriously, I ZOOMED through it. The plot is deliciously twisty, the characters are so well-drawn(and kick butt!), and the world building is top-notch. I loved the mystery elements, the time-travel bits, the quick pacing, and the general awesomeness of the heroine.

I highly recommend this book to younger teens, older teens, and adults who love high thrills suspense.

“The Eighth Guardian” is the first book to be written in the Annum Guard Series and according to the bio, this is Meredith McCarole, the author, first novel. Amanda is enrolled in The Peel Academy which trains students for positions as government operatives. The Annum Guard is a very secretive government agency that even the CIA, FBI and NSA are not aware of. Amanda has just finished her junior year of high school and underwent her first physical and psychological tests. Only one other student has ever graduated as a junior. She is very nervous about the man who has been watching her during her testing and taking notes. Amanda and her boyfriend Abe had planned to join the CIA upon graduating the following year and living together. Amanda was taken directly after the testing and told that she could never see Abe or her family ever again. She very quickly learns that the Annum Guard goes back in time to enhance the course of history. She is a very accomplished operative and is sent on some highly risky operations.

She starts to wonder about a number of incidents that has happened on some previous operations and some of the directives on current operations. Are all of the requests coming directly from the president or is something else going on? Learning the answer to these questions could prove deadly.

I can hardly wait for the second book in the series. A fun read.
