Bark! BarkBark!,
By
This review is from: Ein Produkt Der (Audio CD)
My window was open the first time I listened to this way back when. In a relative lull toward the end of what was the cacophonous first side of the LP, I thought I heard a squirrel barking outside. As there was a huge pecan tree out there, that would be no real surprise. Squirrels hate cats though, and as my cat was (so I thought) outside I thought I'd better take a peek out of that window. Well, it wasn't a squirrel after all. My cat was curled up and lolling comfortably on the bedroom floor. The sound was coming from the speaker of my stereo. Imagine that.

A unique rock record of brief improvisations,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ein Produkt Der (Audio CD)
This is DAF's first record effort, dating from 1979. Who knows what made them change course. but this stuff now seems much more interesting than the simple black leather disco beats of their 80's work. Produkt is a series of short (1-2 minute) improvisations seemingly spliced together. It sounds like it was recorded in their practice space with a basic rock line-up plus keyboards. And the instrumental jams do indeed move along quite nicely. Unlike the other DAF records, Produkt ends up like a gritty version of Section 25's "Key of Dream" (their 2nd record, also a series of improvised grooves) or like early Sonic Youth plus analogue synthesizer. The LP has a rather murky sound to it, and I doubt there's much the CD could do about that. That's fine. It's quite a rocking record, based on a fairly liberating concept: jam, take the good parts, splice them together. And it's a lot easier these days with ProTools, I imagine. Just ask Radiohead.

Experiments,

This doesn't fully make up for DAF's sound as it is a bunch of small cuts pasted together in the manner of the early Faust albums, only deploying a compact version of the noisy arrangements heard in the second side of "Die Kleinen und die Bösen". Nonetheless, the brusqueness and the minimal length of the tracks keep the listener thrilled from beginning to end.
