3.0 out of 5 stars Important Lassus, problematic presentation February 19, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Lassus' Marien Vespers form a major liturgical piece by a composer who left a more varied body of work than any other composer of his century. It is given here with liturgical connectives, including chant and doxologies. Manfred Cordes, however, insists on presenting many of the motets with a single voice, the other parts taken by brass (Posaunen und Zinken). All of the motets are given one voice per part. To me -- and I am in no way an authority -- the effect is unsatisfactory. This may have historicity, but with brass the voices are unbalanced; text cannot be heard (and this is counter-Reformation music); the brass is not always refined. Furthermore, it seems to contradict the liner notes, which describe contemporary illustrations showing 15 to 20 male singers plus twelve boys, with organ. If brass was used only on special occasions, surely there would be no skimping on voices. Correct me if I am wrong. Parts of this disc do convey the glory of Lassus' music. But much of it is frustrating. I revere the achievements of the CPO label, but Manfred Cordes seems to be their favorite in this repertoire, and in future I will avoid him.
